chemicals for opening a green pool

Thanks. I have the tftest kit tf-100 test kit, although I have had it for years so I just refill the solutions every season. I'm testing with brand new CYA solution. I will print out your suggestions and try it tomorrow. thank you!!

chemicals for opening a green pool

Draining is not an option. We can't refill from our well (it would take a week or more) and no one is filling pools around here for less than $500 a truckload right now. I guess I will just have to add cya twice.

chemicals for opening a green pool

I just read recently that after adding CYA you shouldn't backwash for a week. What if your pool is green, gross, and will take days and lots of backwashing to clean, but if you don't add chlorine it's just going to get greener and greener because it's so freaking hot and humid out. And if you...

I need to replace our pump. What brand?

I've only checked a couple of sites but so far, a motor alone costs more than the motor/pump combo. Where is a good place to get just the motor? There are a couple of pool stores within an hour of me and their lowest priced motor is $250 (single speed 1.5 hp).

I need to replace our pump. What brand?

Thank you-I'll look into the 2 speed. We're hoping that whatever we get has the same footprint because we don't want to drill more holes in the cement pad that it's on. My husband said he thought it was a sealed motor, so the bearings can't be replaced? Or not replaced easily? I know nothing...

I need to replace our pump. What brand?

I don't know how big it is but it's supposed to hold 250 lbs of sand. The pump and filter came with the pool. I use an auto vacuum so I need the pump to be strong enough for that. But my question was about the other two brands. The hayward has gotten a lot of negative reviews recently, with...

I need to replace our pump. What brand?

We currently have a Hayward 1.5 hp pump and motor for our above ground pool (18 x 52 steel side). It quit last season (after about 8 yrs) so I'm on the hunt for a new pump and motor. My original plan was to replace it with the same (or close as possible) unit but they don't get the best reviews...

    Pool Math........The App

I was finally able to get in with the facebook log in link. The app froze while logging in so I force closed it. When I opened it again I was logged in. - - - Updated - - - I put in test results but on the "latest test results" page nothing is showing. Is it supposed to show my last tests on...

Are we supposed to log in using our forum info? Anyway, neither way is working for me right now.

    When is draining recommended?

Yeah I don't think i'll take their advice on pool care. I mostly joined to learn about hacks and DIY things for the pool area. Like right now, I'm in the market for some steps plus I'm looking for ideas for landscaping around the pool. As for the pool water, it cost us over $200 to fill (we used...

    When is draining recommended?

I just joined a pool maintenance group on facebook and am shocked at how often people are recommending others to drain and refill. For things like algae, cloudy water, etc. I've seen some pretty green and cloudy pools in this forum end up crystal clear without draining and it seems like draining...

    What happened to my CYA?

I didn't put the sock in the skimmer basket. When I tried, the pump started making a weird noise so I think it was hindering the flow too much. I tied it to the side and went out and squeezed it a lot. It was empty within 2 days.

    What happened to my CYA?

yeah, my garage is full of bleach bottles. I had zero FC this morning after having it at about 14 yesterday (from shocking) so I think my CYA is lower than 20 and probably closer to zero. So at this point I'll have to put bleach in a couple of times a day, I think, in order for the kids to be...

    What happened to my CYA?

The first two seasons we had the pool up, the CYA level was at 40 both times. This time it's below 20 (not sure what it is exactly since the test only goes down to 20). The 2nd season we did very little backwashing at the beginning of the season because we used a cover. Unfortunately our cover...

Local pool store recommends test strips only. What the...

I went to get a CYA kit today because I ran out and didn't want to wait for it in the mail. They pointed me to their test strips and I said no, I don't want strips. One worker said it's only made in strips and the other said "no, you can get a regular test but it's not as accurate as the...

dead frogs in the skimmer basket

My 3 jugs of bleach brought my FC to 11.5 (CYA is 40) so I added another jug to get to 16. I feel much better now and after reading about how just about everyone finds frogs in their pool, dead or alive. I will be checking the skimmer basket every time I go out to check on my critters though...

dead frogs in the skimmer basket

thanks. I'll have to look up the overnight test-I don't remember exactly how to do that. I suppose there are worse things in the pool all summer (bird poo, etc) but just seeing those bloated frogs just about did me in. Washing splashes is one thing. Immersing my kids in the pool later is...

dead frogs in the skimmer basket

Over the spring we have had tree frogs all over the sides and cover of the pool. When we took off the cover there was one in the wall inside and dh said it would find its way out. I don't think it did. Today I went to check levels for the first time and there was something in the skimmer basket...

Best way to get the cover off the pool?

Our cover has maybe 1" or less of green water in it so I don't think I can siphon it out. Is there a trick to getting it off and getting the least amount of water in the pool? We've had a lot of rain lately so the water level in the pool is high (there are holes at the posts and I guess that's...

    winterizing with a sand filter

I tried to do a search but it said the words sand and filter were too common. I've read a couple dozen threads but don't see the answers. We have a hayward sand filter that holds about 250 lbs of sand. So I'm guessing that stays where it is right? Do I take anything off of it other than the...

Leaving for a few days-how many pucks?

Ok thanks. I'll talk to my husband-his brother is coming every day to check on our cattle and hogs so maybe he can have him turn it on when he gets here and off when he leaves. I can leave a gallon or partial gallon of bleach near the pool and he can pour that in halfway through our trip...

Leaving for a few days-how many pucks?

We'll be leaving for about 4 or 5 days. Our pool is 18' and is an above ground one and I have purposely not raised the CYA much because I knew we'd have to use pucks. I'm guessing it's 35 or so. It's a hard test to do. We won't be keeping the filter running while we're gone-we've had some...

When it says to add to the skimmer...

In past years, with temporary pools, it never did get down and stay down. I originally thought my TA this time was 330 but I redid the test, wiping after each drop, and although it's still high, it is about 210 (or 220 depending on how red the water is supposed to get-or maybe a bit more if it's...

When it says to add to the skimmer...

How about the PH Minus? I have to add some every day until we get our ph down (it's normally high for our water and it'll probably take all summer to get it close to the right amt) and it's getting old dissolving it in water and then trying to get it all poured in while holding the solar cover...

When it says to add to the skimmer...

Does it mean I can literally put the powder (ph minus, cya, whatever) directly into the skimmer basket while the pump is running? I tried the CYA in a sock in the basket and it just stopped it up so I took it back out. So I wasn't sure if I'm supposed to just pour the powder in there or dissolve...

Holy Mackerel! SUPER high TA + other questions

That's good to know-thanks. I've been reluctant to use muriatic acid (it sounds so scary!) but trying to dissolve the ph minus all the time is going to get old. In our old pools I didn't worry about it as much since they were temporary ones.

Holy Mackerel! SUPER high TA + other questions

I can probably aim the eyeball to the surface but I'll have to fold back the solar cover there or there won't be any aeration anyway. Or fold it way back and then unfold at dusk to keep the heat in. The kids and I played in there for 2.5 hours or so. FC stayed at 3-4 and ph went from 7.8 to 7.6...

Holy Mackerel! SUPER high TA + other questions

Re: Holy Mackerel! SUPER high TA OK I'll try again later today after the kids swim. I hope that's it-I admit I was droppering with my left hand so I could swirl with my right. Maybe I'll take more time and use only my right.
