I also have straight pvc for returns in my older pool. I found these - they have an expansion connector on one end for connecting to the straight pipe and the other end has a threaded connection. They have worked well for me: POLARIS 1 1/2IN STUB PIPE CONNECTION KIT - 9-100-8003

When you first start your SLAM you add the chlorine and then retest in an hour and add more to bring the FC back up to shock level. Repeat as often as possible - test, calculate, add. You want to keep your chlorine level at shock level as much as possible.

The FAS-DPD test is the one where you add the powder (0870) to turn the water pink and then count how many drops (0871) to clear.

Trichlor pucks have stabilizer. At the bottom of Pool Math look for Effects of Adding Chemicals and it will show you what Trichlor will add to the pool. http://www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html All pucks have either stabilizer or calcium in them. Hope that helps.
