Just taking over care of my pool and overwhelmed.

Sorry for your loss. First step is to get a good test kit. Don't rely on strips or a pool store because both are historically proven to be wrong. After you get the test kit, we will get you up and running.

Question about order of importance on test results

CYA number 1 because it sets the FC level needed. FC next pH after that. All the rest are secondary.

Planting Crape Myrtles around pool - is this a bad idea?

They are an invasive and horrible weed. Plant anything else.

Pool Chlorine Level Keeps Dropping (Please help! Incurring astronomic costs in chemicals)

Yes...we know. The issue is that over time, your CYA levels have gotten too high for your salt water system to keep up. WHAT...IS...YOUR...CYA...NUMBER?????????

Would a pool light off center this much bother you?

It would bother me! But then I reset all the concrete forms after the workers left because they weren't square to the existing concrete patio. Sometimes being an engineer is a curse.

    Am I doing it wrong?

You should have added another drop to see if there was no more change in color, but your test looks correct.

    Testing technique questions

I think you are overthinking this process. Just be consistent and fairly clean and you'll be fine.

    Pump will not stop running.

What a rats nest! It certainly would be easy to mess up rewiring with that tangle of wires.

    Pump will not stop running.

You've got the pump wires under the wrong screw on the timer. They are on the input side instead of the output side. The input side is always on, the output side is only on when the timer is turned on.

    variable vs single speed

I just had my old Hayward single speed pump replaced with a Pentair VSP...motor and pump as I didn't want to screw with mismatched stuff. I paid under $2k installed, and would have paid $1350 without installation. The install gets 2 years of warranty instead of the 60 days if DIY. It's...

    Pool Chemistry Issue?

Citric acid passivation. It's a cheap and environmentally friendly way to fix the problem...but obviously, they don't do it. Also, cold working any grade of stainless steel can cause magnetism that cannot be removed by normal de-magnietzing methods. 40 years of mechanical engineering, mostly...

    Converting to VS motor

Doesn't the VSP system have an output that can turn on the SWG?

    Converting to VS motor

What is involved in going from a (non functional) single speed motor to a variable speed motor? I have a mechanical timer and a SWG...everything is Hayward...no automation. I see that the VS motors pretty much all come with a built in timer, so I assume I don't need the mechanical one any...
