    Dead Algae Dust

Water is clear and balanced, but it seems like a never ending battle to get rid of the constant layer of greenish-yellow "dust" on the bottom. Any disturbance, like a foot step, just produces a mini-explosion of the dust, so vacuuming is a very slow process. I presume it's dead algae, but it's...

Never mind. Ignore this thread . You can't fix stupid and I was stupid. I plumbed it backwards. DUH! I installed a Doheny's cartridge filter. I even read the directions and followed them, even though it's a no brainer. Turned pump on, no water. Investigation revealed that there is a valve...

Pool start up March 2015 - just for posterity's sake.

Last weekend I tried to start the system to let it run for a week before uncovering. Pump tripping GFCI and had rotted metal on bottom. Motor seized. Bought new one plus a cartridge filter. Over the last week, added 3 bags of cal hypo and running submersible pump to circulate water...

    Pump trips GFCI

Wow, I didn't realize that my pump isn't "new" anymore. Turns out it's 3 years old. My how time passes quickly! No wonder the metal of the "base" or "foot" was totally corroded and fell apart when I disconnected the unit and picked it up, as is the exterior metal on the underside.. What with...

Thanks Pat. I'm going to bring it inside. Inspect it, let it dry out, etc. Lovely, I stripped the screws to remove motor from housing. Grrr.

    Pump trips GFCI

I planned to uncover the pool this weekend and in preparation I started plugging everything into the electrical outlet. It tripped. I have isolated the unit causing the trip. It is the pump. Obviously it worked just fine when I unplugged it and drained the system for the winter and nothing...

Pool start up March 2015 - just for posterity's sake.

Covered October 15, 2022. Glued PVC frame together and added more legs. Didn't use pool much this summer. Got in it mostly just to clean it. Not once did I go to Elks pool. This was Verado summer. The Iwaki pump from aquarium and the two speed pump have gotten loud. Will have to find a...

Pool start up March 2015 - just for posterity's sake.

Uncovered pool April 13, 2022. Had built PVC frame to keep cover up off the water over the winter. It collapsed a few times. Saved it and will build it better next time. Started pump and SWG a few weeks ago, so water was algae free, but still a few leaves, dead algae on floor, etc.

Pool start up March 2015 - just for posterity's sake.

Last year, bought a real 2 speed pump. Uncovered pool April 10. New solar blanket. Using Iwaki pump for the garden hose "heater." Water still too cold to get in it. Something is tripping the GFCI but I haven't had the time to investigate.

    Rain and Green Water

Re: Elks Pool - - - 55,000 gallons, uses pucks for chlorination. 1960's in ground concrete pool. Okay, last weekend, my fellow "pool committee" members and I fell down on the job, meaning none of us went to the pool for 4 days straight and it turned dark green. All week I have been adding...

3/4 hp vs. 1 hp pump

Duraleigh: I found several 3/4 hp, dual speed pumps so far. This is the least expensive one: FlowXtreme Pro II 0.75HP Above Ground Dual Speed Pool Pump Model# NE4515 $179 at Home Depot, but I've never heard of that brand. Is it any good? Jimmy The Greek: 2 cleaners - 1 just a handheld...

3/4 hp vs. 1 hp pump

I've had it with Intex pumps. Time to get a real one that might last more than 2 years, but trying to decide between 3/4 hp and 1 hp. Total turnover in 8 hours would be 24 gpm. 1.5" pipes so 40 gpm is the maximum. Going from pump, through 18" sand filter (I'm counting this as two 90 degree...

Pool start up March 2015 - just for posterity's sake.

Uncovered pool March 28, 2020 amid coronavirus self-quarantine. Much muck, mostly spent pollen buds but a good number of leaves. Will need to rig cover better at end of this season. Took 3 packages of di-chlor and 1 gallon 10% bleach to turn water from brown-green to calcium hypochlorite...

    Plaster / Gunnite repair

This is not a crack. It's just where the plaster, gunnite or whatever that material is separated from the underlying concrete.
