    Storm damage ... :(

The tree got cleared off the deck Saturday and I got most of the leaves out of the pool. And then it has rained and stormed non stop since then! I haven't been able to get out there to do anything, not even add bleach, and the pump has been off. I'm afraid I'm going to go out and find a swamp if...

Pool water level? Not sure how high I should be?

I don't think you want the water that high, but it does need to be about mid level on the skimmer.

    Storm damage ... :(

Thanks! I will keep the bleach poured to it this weekend then! Hopefully we will get the tree cleared away soon. And YES .... no one was hurt! Thank goodness!!! The tree feel just a few inches from the storm cellar where my husband and kids were going to take shelter. If it had fallen a few...

    Storm damage ... :(

A tree fell near my pool during a nasty storm yesterday afternoon. I was just getting started on first day of SLAM to kill a small bloom of algae that was causing trouble. It may be a day or two before the tree is removed. (Waiting on insurance adjuster.) It fell right on the deck where the...

Algae patches -- dead or alive?

Oh gosh. I didn't think of that. I will take it out tonight and check for loss in the morning.

    Cleaning filter cartridge?

Great, thanks Jason! Someone else was telling me I had to use a special cleaner on the cartridge.

Can't wait to see pictures of it pretty and blue! Even though that shade of green has a certain charm. :)

    Cleaning filter cartridge?

I have this Hayward pump which uses cartridge filters. What's the best method for cleaning the filters? Does anyone use a certain type of cleaner? Or just a bleach and water solution? I saw a tutorial for cleaning another type of cartridge here, but it looks much different than mine. Mine...

Algae patches -- dead or alive?

I went back and looked at pictures of the pool with live algae and now that I look at it a little more I think what I'm seeing might still be the real thing. Just surprised it's not eating up more FC than it is... Last night FC was 6 before going to bed last night and it was still 6 when I...

Algae patches -- dead or alive?

After finishing my SLAM I have little piles still settling at the bottom of the pool. I try "brushing" it up. It disturbs very easy but I feel like brushing alone isn't stirring it up enough to get it up to the skimmer and have it filtered out. Guess I need to get the vacuum back out on it. It...

    Dead Algae

Thanks Butterfly! That's my youngest. He is 12 weeks old. :) I believe based on those criteria I am done! Thanks for your help. :)

    Dead Algae

I believe I have won the war with the algae! I just have gray little stuff on the bottom of the pool when it settles. I've been brushing that up. Should I keep the FC at SLAM until it's all gone? FC seems to be holding pretty steady. Or should I just let it drop down to normal now that the green...

    Test strips --- stupid question?

I've read through pool school and a large chunk of the articles and forum posts. I understand the number one requirement is a good test kit. And I've gathered the opinion that test strips are evil. I'm just wondering .... how evil? Are the ones that test for FC really THAT OFF? I noticed that...

Proud owner of a glorious swamp!

Enjoying the updates and posts! Can't wait to see pictures of your clear pool. We recently moved to a house with a swamp as well. We are just renting as we are getting ready to build a house. We'll see after this pool if we'll be investing in one for the new house. :)

Advice needed to open above ground pool

Thanks jbizzle. I will read over those again. I'm also going to order a test kit. I was trying to find something local, but alas all the pool stores only sell the strips. Bleh. So you think I should use the pucks while testing for CYA and then just stop when CYA gets to the correct level? I...

Advice needed to open above ground pool

My husband and I are renting a house with an above ground pool. After weighing the pros and cons of draining vs SLAMing we decided to take the risk of draining, scrubbing it down and refilling with clean water. The vinyl liner is fairly new so I think we'll be okay if we work quickly and leave...

Green Above Ground Pool -- To drain or not to drain?

My husband and I are renting a house from some friends while we are building a new house. It has a 26' round above ground pool with a deck built around it. The homeowners said they always drain the pool with a sump pump overnight, scrub it clean the next day and refill. I'm a little nerdy, so...
