Gotta agree with what the pros here have said. With no cya in your pool your chlorine is burning off faster than your swg can make it. Get the cya in there and keep adding the liquid chlorine until your swg can keep up. If you wanna do it right and not waste chemicals you need to do pretty...

Would it be better for the swg/pump to run it less and supplement with bleach?

I've figured out that in order to keep my FC where I want it, I have to run my pump for twelve hours with the swg set to 100%. Turns out my swg is rated for 18,000 gallons and my pool is just over that. My main question is....is it better to run it for twelve hours straight, or on and off...

Did your drain your pool anymore to get your CYA down? SLAMming is going to be difficult with it up that high.

My skimmer in my sw pool is held in place with metal screws. Is this normal? I've only had it up for a couple of weeks and they're already starting to rust. Any thoughts?

Just wanted to chime in with an update. I've been running the swg at full power for around six hours a day for the last few days. FC is up to 4.6 and CC is at 0. It was too dark to test the ph and I just recently finally got all the CYA in so I'll wait a few days before I test that again...

I can't offer much technical advice as I'm fairly new here and new to the method, but I recommend you read the link that Richard posted called "first time shocking pool with bleach". It'll give you a great idea of what your in for to get your pool clean!

The pump is currently plugged into an outlet on a 20 amp breaker. Is that going to cause any trouble on a short term basis?

Just wanted to check in and report... Salt is in, bleach is in, stabilizer is in a sock in front of the return jet, pump is working great and my Taylor test kit showed up today! Tomorrow I'll hook up the swg and start getting everything leveled out! I'm excited!

Hers an update. My electrician friend came over and quickly diagnosed that we were just drawing too much power from the 15 amp circuit (the pump draws 12 amps). So we unplugged everything on the circuit and the pump ran a little longer but still flipped the breaker. So then we noticed that...

BTW - tried it again this morning... Same thing happened. Pump hummed louder than normal and flipped breaker after ten or so seconds.

Is this a possibility... The pump needs to run hard for a few minutes to clear out the air, but after ten seconds of running hard the breaker trips, never giving the pump enough time to clear out. If that's what's happening then the dedicated outlet should solve the problem.

But it was running fine before on an extension cord. Very strange.

A couple other thoughts I had... I'm not hooked up to a dedicated outlet yet, pump is running off of an extension cord. Electrician is coming tomorrow to set it up. I blocked the skimmer because I was focused on dumping the bleach into the skimmer. Could either of those things be causing my...

You and i are in very similar boats. I just finished setting up my 27' agp and am new to all this stuff. Glad I found this site before I became a pool store guy like I was with my older smaller pools. Looking forward to rocking the tfpc method along with you.
