    Saltwater system in hot tub.

You might be onto something about the income stream for manufacturer. I tried to estimate the cost and all I could find was: 🙃 I do like the idea of having it installed at the factory though instead of modding it myself considering the warranty questions that would raise.

    Saltwater system in hot tub.

I’ve been a pool owner for years and at one point looked into converting my pool to saltwater. I wasn’t able to justify it at the time purely on an economical basis since the math did not work out when considering the payback period. I recognize that it’s a completely legitimate reason to...

    Transformer for Pool Lighting

I think I've found a way to route the wiring at least 10' from the pool, with some compromises. However, it would still run within 5' of the pump. Does the NEC say anything about this? It follows that the same water running through the pump is "connected" to the pool where current could...

    Transformer for Pool Lighting

Thanks. Maybe there are some recommendations as an alternative? The pool is close to the property line, thus to go around it will be within the 5-10 foot rule.

    Transformer for Pool Lighting

Moved from here. Any one know if the VOLT transformers are UL rated for Fountain, Swimming Pool, and Spa areas (safe for submersed locations with immersed persons)? My wiring will be within 5 feet of water's edge.

    Leaky multi-port valve

The new top assembly is much smoother. If I put the old top assembly on with the new gasket, it's still hard to turn, but functional. My problem is with either configuration, I still get a trickle out of the waste line. I'm out of ideas for what to do next.

    Leaky multi-port valve

What's baffling is that it happens for both the new and old top assemblies after replacing the spider gasket and they don't behave that way when they're not mounted. My only guess is maybe a wrong-sized gasket which is pushing everything higher in comparison to the gasket that was replaced...

    Leaky multi-port valve

I’ve had the pool for about 7 years and never had any issues with the multi-port valve. About six months ago, I noticed water coming from the waste pipe while filtering. No problem, I replaced the spider gasket and it was fine again. Fast forward 6 months and it is leaking again out of waste...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

One thing to think about with the "incandescent light under the tarp" idea is about the risk of shorting out and tripping a circuit since it's outside exposed to weather / moisture. Then you're worse off than before because your pump may not have power and at least in my case, there's no alert...

    New pool pump options

Yes, that's what I drop the trichlor tablets into when I go on vacation. There's also another section for copper ball bearings, but what that does exactly is questionable, so I removed the insert permanently.

    New pool pump options

Hello! I’m replacing my single-speed 3/4 hp pump with potentially a much higher capacity variable-speed pump. Also, I have a dead booster pump for a Polaris that’s been out of commission for a few years, but never bothered to replace because I don’t mind vacuuming myself all that much. I have...

    Pentair Warranty Questions

Makes sense, but you'd think they'd limit installs to "Pentair authorized dealers" if that were the case.

    Pentair Warranty Questions

Good idea--I'll look into that. I was actually anticipating a cautionary tale from someone with insight saying, "don't do X or it will wreck your new pump" as if it was a common occurrence. Pentair must have had frequent instances of things going wrong on the DIY front for this to be a concern...

    Pentair Warranty Questions

Thanks - that's where I got the 2 yrs vs. 60 days info. Seems extreme.

    Pentair Warranty Questions

Can anyone familiar with Pentair help me better understand how the warranty works on their variable speed pumps? As I understand it’s a two-tier system: if you have it installed by a professional, you are afforded a 2-year warranty. Otherwise, (if you install yourself) it’s only 60 days...

    Variable speed pump install

The main reason I'm skittish about getting a larger pump is because of this video: It explains that if the pump is running at a higher GPM than the filter is rated for, the strain on the motor will wear it out prematurely. So longevity is part of the reliability equation and THP relative to...

    Variable speed pump install

@Jimrahbe Wow if I thought the 1.5 hp model would be overkill, the 3 hp model seems even more so. Are you recommending it on the basis of the wall-mounted controls alone? There is a huge difference in cost. Also, what do you mean by “pretend" unions?

    Variable speed pump install

Hello! I would like to upgrade to a variable speed pool pump. Here are my design priorities: Quiet operation Reliability (proven brand / model) Ease of fitting into existing plumbing Energy efficiency Ergonomics / ease of accessing controls (since VS motors have the timers built-in) I have...

    Iron stains

Hi there. I'm not a TFP expert, but will offer my 2 cents based on recent experience. DO NOT let your FC fall to zero, or if you do, DO NOT SLAM afterwards, even though the SLAM post says you're supposed to do that. I learned the hard way :) You can see what happened in my thread: Help! Iron...

    Help! Iron stains returned immediately

The AA treatment article says "Take your chlorine down to 0 and PH down to 7.2". Ascorbic Treatment to rid Pool of metal stains @Swampwoman: The filter idea will give me something to think about. I have city water to the house and well water to the irrigation and spigots. I might have to...

    Help! Iron stains returned immediately

The reason I thought this is because the SLAM page says so. "If you have algae, or the CC level is above 0.5, or the free chlorine (FC) level is zero, you should SLAM the pool."

    Help! Iron stains returned immediately

It got even worse today :( This is just cosmetic right? I guess I'm going to have to truck water in from now on. I think the chlorine made it worse because it coincided exactly with when I SLAMed.

    Help! Iron stains returned immediately

My only guess is the fill water since I'm on a well. Never had the problem before, but my neighbor did just drill a new well next door, so maybe that stirred things up.

    Help! Iron stains returned immediately

Hello, I’ve owned the same house for 3 years, filling the pool with well water without issues, but for the first time this spring I noticed yellowing below the waterline on my usually white fiberglass stairs. I did the Vitamin C tablet test and concluded it was iron staining. So I did the...

    New liner with wrinkles

I just got my vinyl liner replaced and filled up the pool - everything looked good - went ahead and paid the contractor. After he left I noticed a wrinkle (I’m guessing about 1.5 ft in length) on the bottom of the pool when night fell and I turned on the pool light. I would not have noticed it...

    Vinyl care and protection

Hello! My in-ground vinyl liner is about 11 yrs old and it is time for a replacement. I have several tears that I’ve patched above the water line in two corners where the sun bakes it all day. One of the guys who I got a quote from for a new liner was the original pool builder and I asked if...

    Turquoise Pools

I was wondering what makes a pool have the turquoise look? I’ve seen this in photographs of celebrity pools or high-end real estate photography. My backyard pool just looks blue. Is it just the color of the liner?
