Well, I did have stabilizer in a sock in the skimmer when I was trying to raise the CYA a little. I tried brushing it off and it did nothing...so it's definitely stained. I am not sure if the main drain is operational...how do you tell? The water seems to be flowing into the pool without a...

Yep, water is so clear I can see all the spots where plaster used to be that I scraped off, trying to get at the BA. But I am also noticing some green staining, especially around the main drain at the bottom, which I assume is from the copper piping in the heater. They don't really bother me...

Ok, did the OCLT again this am and lost no chlorine (FC is 11), and CC still at .5 The smell is still there but not as strong. Am I done? Will the smell eventually go away? What if the CC creeps up to 1 or more...do I shock it again? Thanks.

Got it...thanks danacc. Yes, the cover has been off the entire time. I finally turned the pump off and am not going to add any chlorine today. Will test tonight and then again tomorrow morning to see what the CC is at.

No, I mean that the first drop does make it clear...but it's the smell I'm worried about. It's noon here now and there is now no smell at all...it's just in the morning. Any ideas why? Thanks.

Almost the same result this morning...only lost .5 FC overnight and CC is still .5. But it is the same out there...very strong chlorine smell. Not sure what to think...I still don't trust it. And I don't have enough reagent to do the .2 test. I have some ordered but it could take a few days.

Well, I don't think I can do the 25ml sample because it takes even more drops and I am running out...again. So I'll stick with the 10ml sample and hope, (and pray), for the best. Thanks.

Would there be that much difference between .2 and .5 CC? I was expecting the CC to be off the charts, judging by the smell but was surprised that is was not. What should I be keeping my FC at now? (it was still @ 20ppm this am) Thanks.

linen, I tried your suggestion and shocked it at 19 yesterday. This morning when I tested, I lost only 1ppm of FC and the CC was at .5...and true water is clear. So officially I passed the test but I'm not so sure I believe it. The smell of chlorine out there is terrible....really strong. I'd...

After 17 days, I'm definitely losing. I don't think it is ammonia since I replaced most of the water...but what do I know. I think I will try your suggestion...shock it at 19 and then test again tomorrow morning...if it still fails, I need to call it quits.

I am using a small SS brush for the black spots and a wide soft brush for the rest. Yes, I have certainly learned a lot but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be helping me....since I am losing this battle.

Are you sure the chlorine is not hurting the pool? It certainly seems to be. I keep noticing more black stone coming through, (behind the plaster), and sometimes I can't tell if it's part of the pool, or black algae...or black algae on the stone. Yes, it's a nightmare. I had my wife look at it...

I measured the CYA again this morning and it looks to be between 30 and 40 now, (since I added some earlier this week). So I guess I could up the chlorine level but 19 seems very high. I'm just worried about the pool...it's really taking a beating.

That's the dilemma...pack it in or continue to do damage. Yes, brushing is taking off plaster as well but that is part of the Slam process right? I am into this mess so far now that it's hard to quit...even though I probably should. The time, effort, (and $$), invested so far is ridiculous...

Yes, I realize that....which is why I knew it was a bad sign. (it was the CC test that I failed yesterday morning) Well, I think this high level of chlorine for this long has been too much as I can see some of the black stone coming through, behind the plaster. At first, I was scrubbing it...

Thanks linen, but I honestly don't think I will. It was only 7.5. I went out there and all I could smell was chlorine, which I knew wasn't a good sign. The pool and plater are old so all this Slamming is taking it's toll on the plaster, which is another reason I am thinking of shutting it...

This is hopeless. Going backwards. This morning I lost 5.5ppm of chlorine overnight and the CC was at 2.5. After yesterdays test, I thought there was some hope and that this morning's test might be it. But this is not working and I'm at the point now where I'm convinced I will NEVER pass this...

I think I have beat the BA, and for the first time this am, I didn't lose any chlorine. (I actually have .5 more than when I tested last night). Problem is, I also have .5 more CC...so it is at 1ppm...and therefore I still have not passed the overnight test. Do I add more chlorine at this...

The inside of the black dots seem to be more brown than green. I try to remove all the leaves and flowers out....the water clarity is really good. The CC was at .5 1. Yes, but I think it was less than 30 so I am trying to get the CYA up to 30. I've been reading the forums so I have a sock...

It's been 2 weeks and I thought I was going to pass the OCLT this am but missed the FC by 1 ppm. (CC was .5) Question...we have a lot of flowers/bushes/trees around the pool - could the pollen from the flowers and other foreign matter from all these things be messing up my readings or creating...

I tried posting pictures but it says they are too big, and I'm not sure how to make them smaller. The black dots seem to be spreading, even though the chlorine is high, (it was 15 last night...13 this morning). Does every spot have to be scratched off for this to work? I can't seem to keep...

Yesterday I noticed the dreaded black spots are back....can't believe I cannot get rid of this black algae. I have been scrubbing them with a ss brush but the plaster is so old, it is taking off then plaster, and the black spots are still there...ugh. I've got a terrible feeling that I should...

    >>Your chlorine loss has nothing to do with whether or not your filter is working.<< Well, if that's true, why does the pump need to be running 24/7 then? I am dosing it when needed...usually 2 or 3 times a day. It seems to hold up pretty good during the day, which is weird since that is when...

Day #10 and still losing the battle. I've upped my FC from 10 to 12, and then to 14...but it's still not working. (lost 2.5ppm FC overnight and CC still at .5) I'm thinking about putting my new cartridges in the filter, even though the gauge still has not moved on it...but it couldn't hurt...

That CYA test was about 30. (maybe less) The FC test previous to this morning was yesterday about 6pm and it was 8.5 so I added more chlorine. There was black algae but I scraped most of it off before starting and it is looking much better. I still see a couple dark patches on the bottom but...

Thought I'd be done this am but seem to be going backwards. FC was only 2.5 and CC was 1.5. It has been a week now and I thought it would be much quicker than this since I replaced most of the water. The gauge still hasn't moved on the filter. I'm ready to pack it in...seems like I'm just...

Almost there...FC @ 10 this am and CC @ 1. Hopefully will be done by tomorrow, which will have been one week. Question, will there still be algae on my solar blanket and if so, do I need to remove it or will it die on it's own? (it's been off for over a week and I don't plan to put it back on...

Getting worse...this morning, the FC was only .5 while the CC was 6.5. The chlorine keeps going down while the combined chlorine keeps going higher...this is not right is it?? Thanks.
