Pool Liner - 20 versus 27 mil....Merilin Aqua Wave Tile / Caribbean Quartz Floor....

There's no gotchas with a 20 mil liner as far as I know. Half of Merlin's lineup is 20 mil. I'm sure my existing liner is 20 mil and it's been fine for years. With that said, we just went with the Merlin Shelter Cove which is 27 mil. When spending this much on a liner (labor actually) I'm going...

What to do while away for several months?

I'd probably think about letting it turn into a swamp. Then, when I return, drain and refill with clean water.

New Liner - Am I being too picky?

No way! You spent $11k and will be seeing that liner EVERY DAY! Replace it. Would you have accepted the liner BEFORE it was installed if they gave you a stupid 10% discount on it??

Look into getting a Pentair GFCI breaker. Check this post: GFCI breaker started tripping

Mouse in line to pump basket

I'd do the opposite. Do you have a shop vac? Try to blow air into the skimmer line and force the mouse out to the pump

Should I cut down this tree?

I can't speak much about how safe it is for your pool, but I don't think it is appropriate to have a giant tree growing so close to your pool. It's odd, landscape wise, and it will be a practical nightmare. Get some umbrellas instead :)

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

Hi Urchin - The Hotspot website says it may work with 2 speed compressors but you should call or email them to make sure. They are responsive.

What's the best solar heat panels?

Consider as an alternative the Hotspot FPH pool heater. It hooks up to your house AC and dumps the waste heat into your pool. Better cooling of your house and free pool heat with very little footprint on your yard. Would be ideal for puerto rico. You can see threads here for others who have...

Propane vs. Electric Heat Pump in Massachusetts

Hello Sagar from Southborough! Fellow MA resident here. Since you say this is your first pool, let me give you my hard-won advice. You will need a solar cover either way. I have what amounts to a heat pump with a solar cover and my pool is 90 all summer. It would go higher but my thermostat cuts...

How are you storing your chemicals...

We don't recommend powder shock because it contains cyanuric acid which builds up in your pool over time and makes the chlorine less effective. I use liquid shock which is just concentrated bleach and I store it in an outdoor shed.

    Repainting concrete pool deck

You don't necessarily have to go through all that work. I painted mine in 2018 and it is still holding up: Refinish Cement Deck

    GFCI breaker started tripping

Very similar thing just started happening to me. After doing a bunch of research, I replaced the breaker with this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008HYJFBG?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder-t1_ypp_rep_k0_1_15&amp&crid=VO0VXK8C4Z1H&amp&sprefix=pentair+breaker Read up on that breaker and why they made it...

Question re: water temperature loss due to evaporation

It would drop due to the evaporation, and the ambient conditions would try to bring it back up. There's not enough info to know which one would win out though.

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

@newpoolj I run my FPH with low GPM. I don't know what the flow is, but I usually run my VS pump at ~350 watts.

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

If the condenser fan is off, and the AC air going into your house is cold: it's working. It will take ~2 hours of continuous AC run time before you will notice the difference in water temp coming out of your jets.

Should I just let my heat pump run?

Couple more questions: 1. Where do you live (already asked) 2. Does the pool get sun? 3. What temp do you want the pool to be? 4. Do you have a solar cover? To answer your question for the "most reasonable" set of circumstances: assuming you have a solar cover and want the pool temp to be 5...

    Best Battery-Powered Vac?

I have a robot. His name's Robie. I love Robie. But he's heavy and takes a while to set up. And, besides, most of the dirt collects in a couple corners in my pool. I had this thing for the between-jobs. Did great! But water got in and it died. I don't think it was made for deep pools. Does...

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

@newpoolj My system is closed and covered for the winter. I can take more pics in the spring. But the HVAC side I'm not very knowledgeable about. The piping is just sort of ... all there. But I don't know what any of those parts are

Your best bet is to ask HotSpot if they have an HVAC recommendation. Second best bet is to find a green/alternative type HVAC tech. Maybe someone who deals with geothermal or other creative solutions.

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

I have a VS pump that I run 24x7 at very low speed. No issues with the FPH. Finding the HVAC guy is tough. Others have given good advice. I was able to use the company that was in the "This Old House" segment. Lucky me!

    Use tons of chlorine?

OK. So I just got a hot tub. Turns out its harder to keep this clean than a pool! Too little water, too many people. I got it cloudy once because I wasn't using enough bleach. That was fun. So my question is - why not just use an absurd amount of bleach after every soak? Bring it up to 20ppm...

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

So - this is another thing I would change on the FPH. It is too hard to reprogram the set points. It *could* be as easy as a thermostat. Up and down changes the set point. But it's not. It's confusing as heck. I'm not touching it. The cutoff temp is 90 and I leave it there. It was there all...

The tripping pump was unrelated to the FPH. Just a touchy GFCI.

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

Still love it! It's working great still with no issues. No problem with the AC at all. The one thing I'd change - and they may have already done it - is to add a flow sensor. If my pump trips for some reason, my FPH will still call for water cooling. This has lead twice in all these years to the...

Re-using a dead solar cover - still worth it if bubbles are broken?

My thoughts on solar covers changed when I got one. I hated the idea of them for the reasons mentioned. I love looking at my sparkling clean pool, and having the spontaneity to use it whenever. But because 2020 said FU to travel - I said if I'm going to be home all the time, then I'm going to...

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

I'm not understanding this whole subthread. The FPH unit is $1800, which is expensive, but nearly as expensive as the labor to install it. If you're DIY'ing it - you'll save a ton doing the labor yourself. Will you really save a ton more by trying to DIY the most tricky components?

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

xr4ticlone, the FPH will work great for you. But you will never "get your money back" if you're planning to move in 2 years. If that's not a factor, by all means go for it. It will work and do exactly what you want it to. Just don't think of it in terms of ROI. It would be an investment in your...
