Just received the TF Pro test kit - Wow!

I've been testing pool & spa water for over 20 years. I purchased my first Pool Forum test kit back in 2001 or so and after wearing it out built my own using all Taylor re agents and hardware and even a Plano Tackle box just like the original. I have a very good friend who is building a pool and...

    Getting a Hot Tub

We've decided to add a hot tub to our pool area. After researching, I really like the Artesian Rio (link to site). Although a basic no frills hot tub, It is the perfect size and the footprint will work well for us. After a bit of research, they seem to be built well using OEM parts, have decent...

IG VL Pool Leak - OK to Drain

I have a 20k gallon IG vinyl liner pool that has developed a major leak. I Noticed it late new years eve and it has lost almost 2.5 feet of water since. I guess while vacuuming it for our new years eve party I must have somehow exerted enough pressure on the brittle old liner to cause it to...

    Solar Cover, Heater and Pump

I also run my pump (and heat pump on my last pool) with the solar cover on. I usually close the skimmer and pump from the drain to circulate the the coldest water from bottom out the returns to the top in order to warm the pool a little faster.

Builder rinsing grout sponge in pool?

It is not normal, just LAZY! My last pool had tile just below the coping and though a lot of grout ended up in the pool, the builder did use a second rinse bucket. I'd be sure they clean/replace the Polaris. Dave

    A BIG thank you!

I must be overly obsessive (and have been called anal retentive when it comes to some matters) as I pretty much test daily  Congratulations Jennifer. Welcome to the world of the "Trouble Free Pool". Dave P.S. I believe Carl D is the signature you are referring---"5 minutes a day"

Burning Tons of Chlorine and Yet Have High CYA Levels...

mauidad, welcome to the forum. You are in the right place (not to mention living in the "right" place 8) ) Dave's advice above is right on. Especially using the Fast/DPD powder for testing your chlorine. With your CYA level being above 100 ppm, you will need to keep your Free Chlorine (FC) at...

    Leaking Vari Flow Valve

Once again, thanks Waste! I will end up trashing this chlorinator now that I stopped the leak but will buy another one. I occasionally use tri-chlor and like the inline feeders over a floater or throwing a puck in the skimmer. I think I’ve figured out how to keep rotating the Vari Flow valve...

    Perflex or Pro Grid

I currently own an aging Hayward Sand filter and A.O. Smith 1 H.P. pump. Both are on their last legs and I am contemplating changing them out. My last pool had a Hayward Perflex D.E. filter (EC75A) and I absolutely loved it. In fact my only complaint was not being able to vacuum to waste without...

    Leaking Vari Flow Valve

Thanks Waste! The gasket is what I was suspecting. The filter is the original from 1994 and the A.O. Smith pump has has been changed out at some point as the date of manufacture is 2000. Both are working but have seen better days. I made the mistake of taking the lid off the inline chlorinator...

Copper and Silver based ioniser system (Ecosmarte and such)

I know the feeling as it was the same for me. Who knew that our pools would end up being such an enjoyble pastime for me. They say I own a 30 foot sailboat but I just can seem to remember where it is in this heat 8) Dave

Copper and Silver based ioniser system (Ecosmarte and such)

Well said Waterbear! Sabot, Water balancing is not that difficult, if you use common sense AND commit to spending a few minutes a day for a period of time to the chemical needs of your pool. I say "for a period of time" because as you get acquainted with the specifics of YOUR pool, you may be...

    Leaking Vari Flow Valve

I have an old Hayward sand filter with the Vari Flow Valve model SP117 that came with the house I recently purchased. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with a Sand Filter or Multi Port/Vari Flow valve and want a second opinion before I go tearing into it. Every time as of late after I...

Cost of Bleach versus Chlorine Tablets

You are not alone my friend. Nor will you be the last to make that statement. It is a shame that the pool industry doesn't do a better job of informing its customers of how to properly use its products (i.e. keep an eye on CYA and drain at least some water every year) Dave

    Floating Pucks

You can use both bleach and the pucks to chlorinate your pool. Just don't pour bleach on or near a puck and you'll be fine. The big question is why do you want to? Not there aren't very good reasons for using pucks in a floater, just why do you think you need to? The thing we "preach" around...

    Mustard Algae?

Sounds like it could be Mustard Algae. The solution is simple  . Vacuum all you can to waste (if possible), adds lots of chlorine, hold it as precise as possible and consistently high for at least several days. If you'd like more detailed advice, post your CYA numbers, FC/CC/TC numbers and...
