Freeze Preparations (TX, LA, GA, AL, FL, etc)

I'm still running my pool this Winter. Thursday the windchill is supposed to be 0 with 45 mph winds. That will last until Saturday or Sunday. Should I cover my pump and filter with a tarp to prevent freezing? I'm a little afraid the motor will get ot too hot and catch it on fire. What do you...

    0 degrees coming to Dallas

I've decided I'll drain the filter and pump today while it's still in the 20s. Is there anything else I need to do? Is there any use in covering it?

    0 degrees coming to Dallas

Thanks for the reply. I know how to drain it if I have to.

    0 degrees coming to Dallas

Single digit to 0 degrees will be here in the next couple of days. Most of the things I have read say to just keep the pump running and that will prevent freezing. They usually add that "moving water won't freeze". That sounds good, but I know that rivers and waterfalls freeze. What should I...

Do they make a drain plug wrench?

I ordered a drum wrench and it won't fit the plug. The blades are too thick. I've got this on the way. I think it'll work. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002FCP4DO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

I had known it was. I didn't think it would make that much difference and had kind of ignored it. It makes a huge difference.

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

I think I've solved the mystery. I checked the FC this morning and it was at 14ppm. PoolMath called for 42 oz of bleach to bring it to 16ppm. I added it, waited 30 minutes and checked it again. I tested 21 ppm. That's the same kind of thing I've been getting- way too high. I kept testing and...

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

I suppose that's possible. Does that happen with laundry bleach? I would think the makers would be swamped with consumer complaints of people over bleaching their laundry. For the 6% bleach to have done this it would have to have been around 12%.

Acid additions are fine. I'm certain of the volume.

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

That could be where I went wrong. It had been raining off and on all day. I turned the pump on about 7 PM and took the sample about 5 minutes later. Maybe the true reading would have been greater than 10ppm. That's the only thing I can think of. Thanks for your help. I think you found the answer.

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

Doesn't the "Calculate" button refresh it? I'm not questioning the data. I can't understand why adding the bleach it tells me to raises the FC so much. It seems illogical but it is happening.

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

Yes to all of above. Here's a copy paste of the results from the top white window: 1 gallon or 1 (121 oz) jugs Sample from 18" deep with a 24" piece of 1/2" PVC. Same place. I checked early this morning. I added the bleach about 7 PM last night and ran it until 11 PM Plain old WalMart laundry...

    Use Fresh Chemicals!

I just checked my container of Taylor's. There is a little of that at the very bottom. It must be a moisture thing.

    Use Fresh Chemicals!

I raked a little off the top of a new container of R0870 from tft. This is what I'm talking about. Taylor's is a powder throughout.

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

It happened again. I wanted to raise FC from 10ppm to 16ppm. Poolmath called for a 121 oz jug of 6% bleach. It raised it to 21ppm. This is a hard one to figure out. I'm using WalMart's 6% bleach.

    Use Fresh Chemicals!

I might add, I buy my chemicals from TFTestkits.net, except for R-0870 (DPD Powder). Tft R-0870 has rock hard little boulders in it. I buy Taylor's from AMAZON.

    Use Fresh Chemicals!

I found out the hard way. I was opening my pool this year and tested my CH at 125. I loaded it up with calcium and found out later I had grossly overloaded it- all because I was using old regents. It only costs $50 or so to get a fresh TF100 refill. It's well worth it. I'll do it every year...

Do they make a drain plug wrench?

Is there a wrench for this? I try to use the shaft of a screwdriver but when the slot gets vertical I have a heck of a time with the screwdriver. I've tried everything I can think of. The slab is immediately below it and the overhang of the tank is about 2" above it. Very close quarters.

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

You are very helpful. Let me ask an unrelated question. I lose CYA. I know I shouldn't except for spillage. I have very little spillage. My wife and I are up in years and use the pool very seldom. I will lose 20 or 30 ppm oF CYA per year. I guess it's not a major problem. I just add it as...

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

The other day I wanted to raise it from 0 ppm to 16 ppm. PoolMath told me to add 2 gallons and 2 quarts of 6% bleach. I did and it raised it to 21 ppm. I checked everything twice and know I measured accurately. Just one of those things I guess. I know now the numbers PoolMath is putting out...

    Bug in web based PoolMath?

The amount of bleach it tells me to add for FC seems excessive. Example- 10,000 gal pool. 6% bleach. It tells me to add 2 cups + 5 oz to bring it up 1 ppm. That sounds like about twice the amount required. Thanks

    Can't lower Ph

Having a problem for the first time. FC- 7 ppm Ph - 8.2 CYA - 40 TA - 160 Borate- 30 I can't lower the Ph. I've put about 6 quarts of acid in it over the past 4 or 5 days. It's still at 8.2 the next morning when i check it. No aeration going on, that I'm aware of. Been doing TFP for the...

Possibly. I don't know what a rust bubble looks like. The plaster is 20 years old. I looks very good. It looks almost new.
