My pin is held on by a nut. Remove the nut then slide out the pin. Then you can lift the lid. Then I usually just push the metal rod(which is connected to my fingers) through the lid. At that point your lid should be completely disconnected. Good luckluck.

Yes they can get dirty, if your pool is dirty. Can you vacuum to waste

I just went through similar issues. I cleaned my fingers numerous times with muriatic acid, then finally used a degreaser spray. I vacuumed most of the gunk to waste so I didn't keep clogging my filter and continuously SLAMed the pool. Still need to add some cya, and probably a little more...
