Don't trust your local pool store!!!

Thank God for TFP site. I'm a newbie here, but have owned a pool for a number of clueless years. Every year it was the same thing: dip the little strip in the water, try to compare it to the colors which all looked exactly the same to me every time. Then fill up my water sample, take it to the...

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Thanks for the information. Wow, I didn't realize that one puck would add that much (1.2ppm). I'll definitely have to factor that in. Thanks again.

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Got it! Thanks I'll try adding in the evening. I have a whole bunch of hockey pucks since I bought a giant 50 lbs before I came across this website. I can probably afford to use some of them anyway.

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

It's in the sun up until mid to late afternoon. Although the last couple of days have been cloudy. I assume that If I do end up needing to add CYA, I can make use of some of the shock, hockey pucks I have on hand? I will try adding in the evening as you suggest. Thanks.

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Yes, I passed all 3 tests. I also just rechecked all my numbers. They are as follows: PH: 7.6 or slightly more (this has been inching up) TA: 110 (hasn't changed at all) CH: 260 (has come down from about 320) CYA: 50 (more accurate now that water is clear) CC: < 0.5 FC: 7 (perfect since I...

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Now that I am in maintenance mode, I have another question. I am trying to hold the chlorine level around 6 to 7. I check it daily and it appears that I am adding about 160 to 180 ounces of 6% per day. Just curious if this sounds about correct? My CC is less than 0.5. Even though bleach is...

Thanks again. Once the water clears, I'll declare to the family the release of our pool, version 2.0 :)

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

I can see that the water is, ever so slowly, beginning to clear of the cloudiness. Today I could see the bottom well enough that I was able to vacuum out the remaining leaves and some residual dead algae on the bottom. I'm checking twice a day now and keeping it at FC=20 until it is all the...

Interesting. No, I didn't know that was a possibility. I'll consider this.

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Okay, results of overnight test: had FC at 20 the night before and it was 19 in the morning. Nice! Also, CC is no longer registering. Still cloudy as ever. How long should I keep it at 20 if the cloudiness continues. I have a sand filter and keeping an eye on the pressure. When it gets 10...

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

I can already tell that it's going to be beautifull once the cloudiness clears up. The water looks soft and blue.

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Finally, tangible progress. This morning FC was at 12.5 and CC was still 0.5. I added enough to bring it back to 20. Checked about an hour and a half later and FC is 17.5, the highest I have ever seen it during this process. And CC is probably less than 0.5. Adding more again to bring it to...

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

FC: 12.5 - CC 0.5 - So it looks like the CC is getting depleted. Added more to theoretically bring it back to 20. Now I'm down to about 4 gallons of 6% so I better make a run this evening to get more. I'm considering buying stock in the company that makes Clorox. LOL.

Also, would it be better to hold off until evening or should I hit it hard again right now?

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

I'm baffled. I just rechecked my levels. As you recall, this morning I had FC up to 13.5 and had added 2.8 gallons of 6% to bring it up to 20 (my CC was at 2.5). Now, a couple hours later, FC is not even registering and CC is at 1. I realize I need to dump a whole lot more in. But does this...

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Got it. I'll retest again within 2 hours. I've got quite a bit of bleach on hand now and can always make another run to the store tonight or in the morning if I need to.

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

On latest go-round, one hour after putting in more bleach, my FC is 13.5 and CC is 2.5. Adding more to bring FC up to 20

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Okay, I'll make a run to sams club and load up on more bleach. Looks like its pretty much "all in" at this stage or turn my pool into a giant flower pot. Thanks for your help. I'll keep you posted.

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

Thanks for your reply. I've read quite a bit in the pool school section over the past few days, as well as the section on shock. My levels are: pH: 7.3 to 7.4 CH: 320 CYA: 40-50 TA: 110 FC: 0.5

Can't get chlorine up - not sure what to do

I've lived in our house with pool for over 7 years now. I've never had too much trouble maintaining it until now. Last year I had the pool painted with supposedly the best epoxy pool paint you can buy and had heard all the virtues of doing so. Our guntite was starting to look aged and I opted...
