    Algae and Filter is Offline

Make sure to take out the filter socks before adding the DE powder, gonna stop some of it from making it to the filter I would think.

    Is this algae?

Don't know about the BA, but the Ph rise is normal with a SWG. The SWG aerates the pool, which in turn raises the Ph.

Why is there so much dirt on the bottom of my pool?

You could also add some DE powder to your filter to help when vacuuming to the filter. It would help trap smaller particles that normally goes through the sand. http://www.troublefreepool.com/pool-school/add_de_to_a_sand_filter

I guess I will just try to keep FC a little higher to try and finish it off. I just had to place another order for reagents, half way finished with the third bottle and second tub for the fas-dpd test. I hope it ends soon, I'll be out of town this weekend and having a pool party the following.

This morning FC 29. This after evening it was 27 with the swg running at 80% all day. It was cloudy most of the day. Any suggestions about algae in sand, or should the FC kill it off and not have to worry about changing it out?

    Just getting frustrated

pH testing is inaccurate while at high chlorine levels. Usually reads high at least with drop based tests, not sure if it is affected with the test you used.

    Just getting frustrated

Yes, keep the pump running the whole time and keep the FC levels up as much as possible.

I will post a full set of numbers when I get back home as well as some previous numbers. When I do the OCLT it is usually 2ppm loss. No one has been swimming in it. There usually a few bugs in it, but no more than normal.

    Mustard Algae

I cleaned it earlier this year(about 2months ago), got a lot of junk out of it as it had never been cleaned like that before. It felt like some of the sand was clumped together at the bottom. When I would push through it with the hose a lot of dark colored water would come out. I busted through...

    Mustard Algae

OK, I am still not passing the OCLT. :grrrr: I can't find any other hiding places in the pool. :hammer: Could the algae be in my sand filter? Would changing it out help? I've had this problem for the past 3 yrs, so that is why I am wondering about the sand.

    Problem conducting FAS/DPD test

If your CC is still at 1, you need to keep the shocking process going.

    What's your current pool temp?

Mine was 92 earlier today. No solar heat or cover.

Fine tuning my water balance suggestions

No expert here, but yes you should use MA to lower you pH. 7.5 if you're not trying to lower TA any further and 7.2 if you are. Someone please correct if I'm wrong.

Still losing FC, OCLT showed 3ppm. So, the war continues.

    Mustard Algae

Thanks everybody, I have my pool tools soaking right now. My FC level finally went up overnight with the SWG on(was losing FC even with SWG on before I found hidden stash of algae). Another good sign is that all the backswimmers and boatmen bugs that were in there yesterday are all gone. I...

Not unless it is in some piping. No other hiding spots for it. I scrubbed the stairs good while I was in there too just in case.

I think I found the source of my chlorine consumption. :goodjob: I pulled the light and OMG. I found a layer of algae in the niche about 1/4" thick. Vacuumed that up and scrubbed it well. I left the light loose in it so I can scrub it again tomorrow. Hope this will finish the process...

Didn't get a chance to get in this morning, had to go to the store to get more bleach. It is on the agenda for in the morning before I leave for work.

Hopefully it is only pollen, but I still have something comsuming chlorine. That is what I am really confused about.

Thanks for the replies, that is kinda what I was thinking i should do. Just trying to get a hold of all this stuff. I've had to deal with this problem for the last 3 yrs in a row, last yr being the worst(3 outbreaks). Would like to get rid of it once and for all if it is truely algae and not...

    Mustard Algae

I just re-tested after bleach addition 1.5 hrs ago, FC 44-44.5 (slightest pink tint before extra drop). You think I should just let the FC level fall by leaving SWG off and not holding at this level for 24hrs? I will be leaving for work in about 2 hrs and won't be able to retest until after dark.

    Mustard Algae

I've been using vac to clear up spots that come back and brushing daily. They disappear with the vac no problem and if I just use a brush they dust up and disappear. Maybe some of it is pollen, but the chlorine loss was throwing me off.

    Mustard Algae

Lost 2ppm overnight, so brought up to 44 per pool calc. Hopefully I am nearing the end soon. I plan to keep the FC up in this range until it holds overnight. After it holds overnight, should I keep it there another 24 hours as per pool school for mustard algae?
  28. E

    Mustard Algae

Thanks, will bring it up in the morning after I retest.

    Mustard Algae

Sorry for the confusion, I just figured the spots that are reappearing are dead algae. Or at least hoping so. If I don't pass the OCLT, should I bring the FC level up to mustard shock or leave it at regular shock until I pass the OCLT?

    Mustard Algae

Thanks for the quick reply, that's why I love this site. The algae was doing that exact thing before I started shocking. That pic was after 4 days of being at shock level. Mostly on floor, then started on the slopes from wall. At first I wasn't sure if it was algae or pollen at first, but...
