    New Motor - Funny Sounds

Yes, sorry, B2984. Here is a video: IMG 6225 - YouTube In the video the pump starts at high with the booster pump running. I switch the pump to low, then realize the booster is running and turn it off. I then switch the pool pump off and then turn it back on so you can hear transition noises...

    New Motor - Funny Sounds

My motor died on my pool. It made a humming noise. The run capacitor went bad. I replaced it and the new one went up in smoke. I think the shaft also failed because the bottom half of the motor was falling to pieces due to rust so I decided to replace the entire motor, shaft, O-rings, and...

    Booster Pump Overheating

Yes, my system requires that the main pump be on before it will allow the booster pump to engage. There are no problems with that.

    Booster Pump Overheating

We noticed our Polaris hasn't been picking up lately so I went to investigate. Our booster pump (Hayward 3/4hp) starts buzzing, heats up and the thermal protector kicks in and shuts the motor off. The pump is 5 years old. I've read that the most common issues are debris blocking the impeller...

    Stuff missing from Pool School

It's valuable information and I agree that it should be listed somewhere. I stored chlorine in my tool shed for years and couldn't figure out why all my lawn tools rusted prematurely. Yes, there are warnings on the labels and storage information can be found online but it's the point of pool...

    Bleach Prices 2015

Can anyone in DFW beat $0.29 per oz/chlorine? I've been around and Lowes is the best deal I've found ($3.78/128oz @ 10%).

    2012 Build - Pictures

Built the pool in 2012. Started reading TFP back in 2010 with my last pool but just started participating recently. This picture is when the pool was a few months old. Here is the pool today (not quite as sunny today):

Pool size based on salt add

I know exactly how large my pool is (down to the gallon) and the pool calculator tells me to add about 25% too much salt. It could also be a combination of bad tests (salt tests are notoriously inaccurate) as well as other chemicals adding salt (bleach for instance).

    Stubborn Alkalinity

Well, after adding acid again this morning my water is finally ready. I tested tonight and my pH is 7.5 and my TA is 80. I added 16.3 boxes of Mule 20 and 4.5 gallons of muratic acid. Now the waiting game to see if proportions are correct. Fingers crossed!

    Stubborn Alkalinity

Tested again and pH is at 7.5 and TA is at 90. I dosed more muriatic acid and will test more tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for the support.

    Stubborn Alkalinity

TA of tap water is 240. I just retested and pH is 7.2 and TA is back to 100 so maybe I messed up the previous test.

    Stubborn Alkalinity

I added a little CYA and Calcium on Thursday since my niece and nephew accidentally drained a few thousand gallons last weekend. How do you calculate Alkalinity drop? I should also add that my water is crazy high in carbonate hardness (27 degrees).

    Stubborn Alkalinity

It's 31.45% muriatic acid. It's doing it's job dropping pH so I know it's working.

    Stubborn Alkalinity

No refills in the past 2 days. No autofill. I wipe the tip with a wet paper towel after each drop as the instructions say. I'll add more acid and keep on testing. Follow up: Running the pump 24x7 does speed up the process, right? I don't mind doing it but don't want to waste the electricity if...

    Stubborn Alkalinity

I decided to add borates to my pool water and step #1 is to get alkalinity down. My alkalinity has always been a little (~120) high and normally I don't worry too much about it. I tested on Thursday and my pH was 8 and alkalinity was 110. I added a gallon of muratic acid and retested Friday and...

    Bleach Prices 2015

Every time my mom is over she tells me "I ran a pool for over 10 years. Bleach will eat all the plaster on your pool." I ask her how many times she added bleach to her pool and she says "0." I then ask how she knows if she never tried it. :)

    Bleach Prices 2015

I asked the Leslie's here and was told that nobody in the state of Texas sells liquid chlorine and that it's horrible for your pool. I had to hold back from laughing and telling him he could buy some at any grocery or hardware store and that other Leslie's sell it. I guess I'm stuck paying...

I tested FC and it didn't drop at all since I tested it last night (9 hour time span). CC is 0.5 and the water is clear.

    Another Frustrated Pool Owner

I've been SLAM'ing for 12 days and today is the first day the pool looks normal. I know the SLAM guide says 3 criteria. My water is clear and my CC is 0.5. I'm doing a test tonight and tomorrow morning to check FC drop. There is some algae scale still in spots on the floor and steps. Should I...

    Another Frustrated Pool Owner

72 hours in and the pool isn't following any patterns (not that I expected it to). I'm checking it about every 8 hours. Sometimes the FC drops 1 and sometimes it drops 15. From 7am to 3pm seems to be the biggest drop. There usually isn't a drop of more than 2-3 between 3pm and 10pm. Between 10pm...

    Removing water for cya

I've never had to drain my pool for CYA but I've had to drain it due to excessive rain. I just use a 1.5" pool hose and create a siphon and drain it to the corner of my yard. Going from filled to the top to normal level takes ~30 minutes.

    Another Frustrated Pool Owner

Should my pump run full speed 24x7 until I'm done SLAMing? If I'm not adding bleach (while sleeping) should I turn it off? Also, I have extra phosfree that I can't return. Should I use it?

    Another Frustrated Pool Owner

Sorry, I have a bad habit of not paying attention to adjusting pH. It's something I instinctively do and have it down pretty well without testing (I still test to validate). My pH rises 0.5 every day and has to be constantly adjusted. If I adjust to 7.2 it will be 8+ in a day and a half. I just...

    Another Frustrated Pool Owner

The storm broke for a little while so I tested. Question: How long does bleach take to register? I added 8 bottles of 8.25% bleach 2 hours ago to hit a FC of 31 and here are the results: pH: 8.0 FC: 12 Salt: 2800 CH: 280 CYA: 70 TA: 110 How often do I need to add bleach? SLAM says not more...

    Another Frustrated Pool Owner

I'll retest as soon as the storm passes but for now, numbers as of last night according to TF-100: pH: 8 FC: 0 Salt: 3100 CH: 220 CYA: 80

    Another Frustrated Pool Owner

My pool has been green and cloudy for the past couple months and nothing I do seems to matter. There is a little algae on the steps but really it's not that bad compared to previous issues. We spot brush every day. The water looks like it is cloudy with green algae and it's not possible to see...
