Ahh no, nothing like that, outside built-in automation that our current pump offers (starts pumping at specific time). No automation for turning valves, heating up, etc.

What type of automation? My current setup (before pump went out): it begins at a time (10am or so if I recall) and turns off later in the day. Was that what you meant by automation?

Pretty old, possibly original o-ring. I'll take a better look at oring and the roundness now and see if this issue is plausible. Noted that you said this is likely not the issue - just want to make sure we can rule this one out. BRB

Re: the cartridge filter cylinder container - when I have the rod removed, I cannot close top/bottom parts together. Is this indicative of a lubricant issue (as in maybe the rod wasn't the issue in the first place)?

Is this a good 3hp variable pump replacement? Black And Decker.. seems like Amazon reviews like this product, but I'd trust the opinions of experts here in this forum more...

The pump is dead. I'll need to get a replacement hp (which I will keep at 3hp as per your suggestion). If you have a brand recommendation other than what I have in my signature I'll all ears. I will update my signature with the SWCG model number, good idea.

Yes, water level is _at least_ more than halfway up the skimmer opening. We are good with filling up our pool with new water as needed if the water level falls a bit low. It's just that it looks like pump works pretty hard, then it lets up, water level returns to normal, no longer sucking in...

Our 3 hp variable pump has finally died on us. We knew the time was coming since it was making unusual noises and pool service guys working on something else unrelated to pump told us they think our pump will die eventually, but is fine for now and functional. However, days are numbered...

Update: It was the check valve! Paid $62 (taxes included) at local pool supply store (didn't want to wait on Amazon, I needed to know if this is the issue before the pool repair company appointment on Monday). Had to also invest into a PVC plier tool (~$16, Home Depot) when I had trouble...

Yeah it is raised spa overflowing into pool. Added some more photos for context. The "check valve" wouldn't be that dirty looking orange-ish see-thru bulb-shaped thing in the 1st photo right? Edit: Ahh the orangish thing in my first photo attached to this comment has "Flo Control" label on it...
