I'm sorry, I have a differing opinion on your latest bucket pics. I've looked closely and I'm seeing the water still green after the chlorine bomb. Maybe others can take another look. If this is the case, than the metals theory may need to be explored here? Oxidized metals can create a...

Replenishing water in Chicago weather? Also ? about drain

Re: Replenishing water in Chicago weather? Also ? about drai Yeah, 1" per day is way too much. I'm in the far northwest suburbs, and during the month we didn't have any rain at all, I was maybe losing 3/4" a week. I would look for a leak somewhere.

yeah, that should help get that dead stuff to filter out. I do see an improvement. You went from cloudy to translucent it seems. That yellow most likely is the dead algae, might be a good idea to brush every now and then to get it to circulate through the filter.

I agree, now we're seeing some improvement! Man, what a stubborn algae this is. But, we're making progress, and that's the important thing. It's starting to look like its settling a bit even with the filter going. If there is a way to adjust your return jet, I would nudge it a little towards...

You could try that tonight, turning the pump off and see if it settles to the bottom, and SLOWLY vacuuming it to waste. Before doing so, I would make sure your FC is still at shock level. Since the algae won't be actively growing at night, it would be the best time to try it. Chem geek is...

Ok, I've done some research on the products you're using. The clarathon hose filter looks to be just a pleat filter, so no prob there, in fact it'll help you in the long run when adding fill water. The Banish algaecide does contain copper (attached MSDS), but unless you have used a tremendous...

Hi guardwife, Sorry didn't get a chance to get on this morning. Seen your photos from this morning, and am perplexed at the lack of color change. With the shock level you have been at, we should have seen a bit more improvement. Now, this very well could be a stubborn algae bloom. So, I'm...

If you've added water since your last test, yes, depending on how much water. If not, then it's just that it's getting consumed killing the algae. Until your water starts clearing, expect to see the FC level drop quite often. That's why you want to test frequently to make sure you keep the...

That could be where you lost the 5ppm CYA then  In that case, 20 FC target should be plenty. I wouldn't go higher than that as a target. Wait till the FC gets below that before adding any more bleach. I checked the pool calc for ya. To raise FC every 1 ppm you should be adding 16 oz...

    Cloudy water wont uncloudy ..

CYA usually will not change unless its diluted, i.e. draining water and replacing. Day and night would not affect it. A variation of just 5ppm is not a real concern at this point. On another note, if your FC is at 25, I would hold off on adding any more bleach. According to the CYA chart...

The fact that you are consistently getting a CC reading of 1 or more means that your killing something with your FC. You may have read this already, but the way chlorine works is by combining with the organics and killing them. Hence, the CC reading. If there is no organics to kill, the CC...

Linen, in the past I have usually gotten a false low on my taylor r-0004 test while at high shock levels. At any rate, Linen's right, at this point I wouldn't trust the PH test, unless it starts getting close to 8 and you've maintained the same FC level. Rule of thumb, if your pH result rises...

    Cloudy water wont uncloudy ..

Cloudy skies are good, but not a total prevention of algae growth. Plant life can grow with the dimmest of light sources, albeit slower than if exposed to unblocked sunlight. Don't let your guard down ;)

    Cloudy water wont uncloudy ..

If your CC is going up, that means your killing something. Keep at it. I would keep a consistent eye on the FC, don't let it go down. Eventually, your water will start to un-green (not a word, I know:) ), and turn a white cloudy. I'm gonna say you'll definitely see some progress after an...

    Cloudy water wont uncloudy ..

Sounds good! Your persistence will pay off in the end believe me :) I've been there too, and completely understand the frustration. We inherited a pool from the previous owners, when we bought our house 7 years ago, and received zero guidance from them. I found this and another site called...

CYA of 30 is fine right now. I wouldn't any more stabilizer. It takes a while to dissolve, so you may be higher than what your testing at right now. Once you get to the point where you can't see the dot any more, that is what your level is. You don't want it higher than 50, as that is where...

when using a floc, your gonna get much better results with dead algae. Which means your gonna have to shock, and be diligent about your free chlorine levels. Algae multiply fast, and by the looks of your photos, the kill rate seems to be much lower than they are able to multiply. Like any...

Air in the filter. What does it mean?

Yeah I would check the o-ring on the cover. They tend to flatten with time. Also, any o-rings on/in the filter itself. Plus any hose clamps that you may have may need to be tightened. Also, a low level of water in the skimmer may cause the pump to suck in some small amounts of air which...

High CYA & TA, or manageable?

Yeah, TA of 150 isn't bad. At least if your calcium isn't off the charts. If your pool is clear, I wouldn't worry that much about it at 150. I deal with high TA every year at opening due to our fill water being so high (220 out of the faucet). I usually point my jet upwards for splash for a...

    Can't get pool clear!!

Hang in there. It looks like its coming along, sometimes it just takes a while. It looks like your at cloudy and blue which is a sign that the chlorine is doing its work. It also usually means that your almost there. Its a matter of how long the filter will take to get all the oxidized...

    Can't get pool clear!!

Looks like your getting there :) Sounds like you had a lot of leaves and debris, so this could take some time, but it will clear. I wouldn't shut off the filter at all. You should be leaving it run 24/7 while shocking. Whatever isn't heavy enough to fall to the bottom, your filter should be...

how much does it cost to refill the pool

You may also want to keep in mind that your cya numbers are "in the rears". That is, it takes a while for cya to dilute and show up in a test, so if you're currently using pucks for chlor, then the amount your test shows today is actually what it was up to a week ago. It doesn't take into...

    Algae or Metal problem

Yeah, I had a copper problem last year, which a friend helped me out with. He works at a waste water treatment plant. Long story short, we raised PH to above 8 to precipitate everything, than used an industrial floc which he acquired for me (wink, wink) ;) to settle it and vacuumed it out...

    Can't get pool clear!!

Hi. What kind of test are you using? If your using standard drop tests you're not going to be able to test for chlorine levels above 5 very accurately. With cya at 30-50 you should be shocking at 15. You could try diluting your test sample using the shot glass method. I would do a 2:1 dilute...

White chips / powder from returns...

I don't have any experience with SWG's, but if this was a pool without one here some ideas off the top of my head. What kind of filter is it? If its DE, then I would check the grids for holes or damage. If sand, then maybe a broken lateral or gasket tear. If cartridge, then maybe a hole in...

New to TFP, and looking for ideas on managing high CYA

Wow that calcium reading is pretty high! Did you do a test on your fill water for hardness level? That could be the source for the calcium. A lot of municipalities, as a cost saving measure, are cutting back on the water softening during water treatment. Just an FYI.

    Need Help Getting Started

If you used a flocculant, they should have told you to circulate the water for an hour or so, then shut the pump off and let everything settle overnight and vacuum to waste the next day. :?: Never heard of an algae test. Something new? With a CYA at 65, I would bring the FC up to 15 or 20...

Inline chlorinator or floating buoey...Your thoughts

First thing, click on pool school above. There's a LOT of useful info there. You're gonna need to do test with that kit you bought. Follow the instructions in pool school for correct levels. Keep an eye on the CYA levels when using 3 inch chlor pucks. They will make it rise in a hurry...

    does rain cause water cloudiness.

I have to recommend from personal experience NOT to use floc. 5 yrs ago (when I was naive) I used floc twice, the first and last time. It was a horrible experience, causing more cloudiness, foam, etc. Long story, but more trouble than it was worth. Took almost 2 weeks to get the stuff out of...
