    Super Pump making loud noise.

I opened up the pool and started the cleanup process. The main pump, Hayward super pump 0.75 HP is making a loud noise. I replaced the motor with a quality motor two years ago, so I think the noise is coming from the pump side as opposed to the motor. A new pump now goes for $700, as compared to...

    Polaris pump doesn't start

Hey, Guys. The booster pump for my Polaris 380 just hums for 3 or 4 seconds and shuts off. I tested the start capacitor, which tested good, and then just to be sure i installed a new one, and the result is the same. I took the end cover off and can easily turn the shaft, so it is not seized. I'm...

Hayward DE Filter Head is Cracked

I’m ready to order a new filter. I’d appreciate any comments on my options. I’m replacing aged Hayward DE3600. My valve connections appear to be 2”. I would like a quick solution. I uncovered the pool and discovered the filter cracked. So the options below are those I can get this week from...

Hayward DE Filter Head is Cracked

I see in your signature that you went from a DE filter to a sand filter. I suppose if I were to do that I would have to get a stronger pump than my 3/4, and I would maybe spend as much as i would getting the DE filter ($535) and keeping my pump.

Hayward DE Filter Head is Cracked

I screwed up badly. When I closed the pool last year, I failed to drain the filter. So, the head has a big crack. It's a Hayward DE3600 and the head part is discontinued. An exhaustive search on the web did not turn up the part (DEX3600BT). So, I am open to any suggestions. It's Saturday and I...

    Installed SWG, How to test?

Wow, I found a great place to order replacement Taylor reagents. Amato Industries, in the DC area. Price was about half of what I could find on Amazon, and shipping is free. So, I ordered the two reagents needed for SW testing and I don't need a to buy a new kit.

    Installed SWG, How to test?

Yes, I know I need to test those things, but can I still use the same reagents and procedures? Salt is obviously an additional test I need to do.

    Installed SWG, How to test?

I got my SWG going this afternoon and am letting it run overnight. I've read the excellent post about balancing with a SWG. My question is - I have a Taylor Complete test kit I've been using pre-SWG - Which of those tests are still usable with the salt water pool and for which ones do I need a...

    Ordering a new cover

My pool is 18.5 by 36.5 and I have never had a cover. But, I'm ready to order one and would appreciate any expert advice. From reading earlier postings, I believe a mesh cover will be most convenient. I do have pine trees near the pool and will get needles through the winter that I'll need to...

    Pump seized.

A belated thanks for the advice earlier. I put in a new starter capacitor and now she runs just fine. Perry

    Pump seized.

Where can I get access to the shaft to see if it will turn freely?

    Pump seized.

My pump has been slow to start recently and now will not go at all. Just hums. i talked with my irrigation guy, who has lots of pump experience, and he advised that while it could probably be repaired, it may be time to get a new pump due to the age of this one. I've had the house/pool for 5...

    Cal-Hypo

I've been doing BBB for the last year or so and the pool is great. But, i'm getting tired of lugging large jugs of 6% bleach from Walmart, so was thinking about a more convenient alternative. The local chemical supply has 68% cal-hypo. I calculate that it will cost me about two-thirds what it...

    masking tape residue

I've finished painting the concrete deck around the pool and it's beautiful. But there's one last problem to solve. I used masking tape (3M Painter's Grade) on the plastic rim of the pool. When I removed the tape it left quite a bit of adhesive on the plastic. It's very sticky to the touch...

    Cleaning & painting concrete deck

Thanks, this is helpful. Any thoughts on the type of acid and the concentration? I have muriatic here.

    Cleaning & painting concrete deck

I'm going to paint the concrete deck around the pool. It's never been painted. I'm considering the Quickrete Multisurface Concrete Sealer. They recommend cleaning first with their product called Bond Lock which cleans and etches. I'm concerned about getting some of this product in the pool...

    Considering Solar Cover

I'm considering getting a solar cover, primarily to raise the temp and extend our season. I've looked at enough sites to get a good idea of how the covers and rollers work. My concerns have to do with debris and how a cover would work related to that. 1. I get pine needles in the pool year...

Washing Soda resulted in cloudy pool

I left the filter pump going all night and this morning it's clear. Thanks. Now, if we just get a couple more warm days and nights, I'll be swimming.

Washing Soda resulted in cloudy pool

I had to replace my stabilizer after the winter, so I added CYA to 40 ppm. My pH went down to 7.0, so I looked at the Pool Calculator and then added 4 lbs of washing soda (sodium carbonate anhydrous). That was 2 days ago and my pool is still cloudy. I'm wondering if the washing soda hasn't...

    Stabilizer after the winter

Last year my stabilizer got way too high due to using stabilized tabs. Then I learned about you folks and switched to BBB. I had reduced the CYA to about 70 last year by replacing some water. I figured most of it would still be around now. But now it tests very low - there's not enough...

    Polaris is slow

I've a Polaris 380. It worked nicely last season, but now that I am getting ready for this year it is operating weakly. I checked the wheel RPM per the users manual and found it to be slow - it's about 24, but is supposed to be between 28 and 32. So, it does not have the strength to crab...

    Polaris booster pump

The 3/4 hp booster pump for my Polaris 380 has been noisy for some time and now sounds like it's going to self-destruct. So, I pulled it out and took it to a local pump servicer who is going to take a look at it today and tell me what it needs. I can get a new Hayward pump delivered for $176...

    Chemicals for Winter

I leave my pool open for the winter, just for the appearance. We won't swim again until probalby May here in central NC. I've not added any chems since the fall. When the water temp was in the 50's or 60's I got some green algae that is still there. It comes off the liner easily (where the...

Am I on the right track?

I've recently switched to BBB and am trying to get into a good routine. I'm adding bleach in the evening. 3 qts. is not doing it - FC levels the next morning are 3 to 5. With CYA at 70, I understand I should be at 7 for FC. Also, it's been a week since I adjusted the pH. Its gone from 7.4 to...

    Replacing pool light

I'm a new member here and delighted to have found this site. We bought this house with it's nice pool and I'm learning something new every day. The light in the pool is a Sunlite, 110V, 250 watt unit that does not work. I pulled the light out and found the receptacle to be burned up inside at...

    cloudy pool

OK, I replaced about half the water in the pool. Readings, subsequently, were FrCl 0.5, pH 7.1, TA 40, CYA 70. I added 5 lbs. soda ash - next day readings were FrCl 0, pH 8.0, TA 90. Yesterday, I added 4 gal. of 6% bleach. Result today: FrCl 6, ph >8, TA 80. Throughout, CH has read zero with...

    cloudy pool

After another 24 hours, the cloudiness has dissipated about 95%. I tested more parameters, using a Taylor test kit: Free Chlorine 2 (my floater was out of the pool today), pH 7.6, TA 120, CH unmeasurably low, Cyanuric acid over 100. You are correct that I've been using the TriChlor pucks, not...

    cloudy pool

I had neglected my water chemistry for a couple of months, except for free chlorine, whidh had been easy to maintain. Then I started getting a black, soft, precipitate in the deep end of the pool. So, I checked and found pH at 7.0 and TA close to zero and CH close to zero. So, I added 15 lbs...
