    Leak or evaporation?

Hello! I'm bringing back this thread, because...well, here we are again! Just closed the pool on Wednesday (3 days ago), and have lost 1 to 1.5 inches of water which is precisely consistant with what I lost per day last fall/winter at a half inch per day. See the above portions of the thread...

Started seeing algae spots despite balanced water

Yeah, I thought about that too. Maybe the FC drops low enough towards the beginning of the evening before the filter (and chlorinator) have a chance to pump up the FC allowing some algae growth. I'll bump it up and drain pool next week slightly (2-3 inches and refill) to see if that'll balance...

Started seeing algae spots despite balanced water

Hi, Pool owner of several years, never really had an algae problem. This past week I've started seeing small algae spots pop up over night. I brush them off, run the filter. Even on areas of the liner that don't have visible spots I see some stuff (likely algae) coming off in a cloud. My...

    Leak or evaporation?

I was going to but the little blurb at the bottom of the page of my original post said it was an inactive thread and might not get a lot of traction. This is fine too!

    Leak or evaporation?

I will of course continue to monitor and if I feel that Im losing more than I should, Im repeating the bucket test and might have to drop the 500-700 for a diver. No one in my area seems to want to dive into a pool, ever and upcharges me when I request a dive.

    Leak or evaporation?

https://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/leak-or-evaporation.265659/#post-2325075 I no longer think it is a leak. See the previous thread I posted back in November shortly after we closed out brand new IG pool. Throughout the winter, I regularly observed .5 inch of water loss a day. This was...

    Leak or evaporation?

Update on this..Filled up pool again. In the process of another bucket test. The bucket did lose some water over a 24 hour period, maybe half inch. The pool lost about two inches. However, when I popped open the corner of the cover to look there was a massive amount of steam and water vapor...

    Leak or evaporation?

Hi, A little history on my pool...Please stay with me :) I live in North West NJ. Our new IG pool build started last September (dug, built, filled, covered in December. By February I noticed 20-30 inches of water loss. I struggled to keep the 5 dollar wal mart crummy tarp that the cheap pool...

    Leak or evaporation?

I know. We had such an issue with the pool builder diagnosing the first leak, and then fixing it. I'd have to be the unluckiest bloke in the pool world to have two leaks on a brand new pool that has not been used yet. As mentioned, when it was 'winterized' after the backfill last fall, when I...

    Leak or evaporation?

Hi, We are nearing the end of our (nightmare) pool build here in NJ. This is the second in ground pool we've built in 7 years (we moved this past year and put another one in) so we knew what to expect going into it. Long story short, we lost over 20 inches of water over from Mid December...

High water level - winterized in ground pool

Hi, I live in NJ, the water level in the IG pool is about 1.5 inches from the liner track. The water is quasi-frozen (not a solid brick of ice. There is liquid water around the ice but there is defintely some ice). I have two concerns: 1. If the water reaches the liner track, wont a bit...

Possible switch from DE to Cartridge, thoughts?

HI guys, thanks for the info. If and when I switch, it will be to cartridge. But I had someone out to replace the 'replacement' spider gasket that I had put in (and was leaking). Problem seems to be solved. the smallest amount of DE getting in, if you know where to look and are looking for...

Possible switch from DE to Cartridge, thoughts?

Ever pool installer/maintenance/service person I speak to is trying to convince me not to go cartridge and that it would be the biggest mistake of my life. I even had one guy tell me that the taylor test kit is trash, that liquid chlorine is a waste of my time and everything that Ive been doing...

Possible switch from DE to Cartridge, thoughts?

for a 16x34, 3ft shallow 8 foot deep (something in the neighborhood of 21k-23k gallons or something??), 1hp pump...what size cartridge filter is recommended? Im thinking the hayward c3030 multielement 325 sqft...bit pricey :( but probably perfect for my pool. Thoughts?

Possible switch from DE to Cartridge, thoughts?

Newdude, thats exactly what I want. I am 90% sure I want to ditch the DE system (and the leaking MPV) to go with a much simpler cartridge system and valve. Filter, and waste. Thats all I want. It'll sit in filter 90% of the time, and I'll switch to waste when I want to drain water or vac up...

Possible switch from DE to Cartridge, thoughts?

The valve that I have before the pump is one of those pentair ones where you unscrew a screw move the handle in the new position that you want, and screw it back in (hand screw). It then goes to pump and then to the Multiport valve that I have that has options for...

Possible switch from DE to Cartridge, thoughts?

I have a diverter valve before my pool pump that, I guess, controls flow for returns and skimmers. If you are saying I can get rid of the MPV, do I need any other sort of valve for a cartridge to set things to closed/winterize, recirculate, or waste? I do want a waste valve so I can vac to...

Possible switch from DE to Cartridge, thoughts?

Jim, that puts my mind at ease a bit. I just didnt want to have a noticeable difference in water clarity. People always marvel about how crystal clear my water is, even other pool owners (one of them has a cartridge). I have pool experts in my area stumped as to what the problem is. Ive...

Possible switch from DE to Cartridge, thoughts?

Hi, Please refer to DE getting into pool for my reasoning behind contemplating the switch to cartridge. Not having dropped $90/hr on a pool guy to spend a few hours simply diagnosing my problem...Ive replaced EVERY element in the filter with the exception of the stand pipe. Im still getting DE...

    DE getting into pool

No go. And I think I messed up my MPV by attempting to change out the spider gasket. Spent a few hours scraping out the old. Put the new one in place, ridge side up, with pea size silicone adhesive at the ends of the spikes...Letting it sit over night but I have serious doubts. Im...

    DE getting into pool

Ok so I think we have some progress. Got all new grids yesterday. When I drained the filter I didnt backwash (because if it IS the spider gasket causing the issue when I backwash, I didnt want THAT to interfere with determining if the problem is the grids or not). I simply unplugged drain and...

    Spider Gasket replacement?

Hi, I have a post/thread going on about DE getting into my pool when the pump is running. Reference DE getting into pool . You'll be able to read everything I've tried and Im nearly out of options aside from replacing the Spider Gasket or all of the grids even though they all, individually...

    DE getting into pool

Update: Still believe I have the DE problem. When I fired up the filter after performing the pre mentioned steps, a HUGE cloud of DE came puffing out of the return jets. Water was really cloudy. I let the filter kick on during its normal cycle in the evening, I see DE building up in the usual...

    DE getting into pool

Well thanks for keeping my problem in mind haha. I have multiple pool store guys stumped, pool service guys stumped. No one really wants to come out and figure whats wrong. So as mentioned yesterday I let the grids soak in a degreaser for oils, dirt etc from around 12pm yesterday to 9am...

    DE getting into pool

Sorry, to answer your questions: I "think" I see it at start up through the returns...its sometimes difficult to tell the difference between tiny air bubbles and DE...but I have definitely seen it at start up at times. Lasts 5-20 seconds maybe and then I dont see it anymore. It builds up over...
