    Iron, green water, etc

Very helpful! I had forgotten that about polyfill (luckily I have some) and hazily recalled something about iron aggravation. Many thanks for this!

    Iron, green water, etc

Hi all, I've been a member here for 10-12 years, but have lost track of guidance about iron levels, and pool color/cloudiness. I've got a small in-ground (13K gallons), and it's very old (90 years), with a built-in iron ladder and iron parts of the main drain. I've tried to keep the ladder...

    Old old pool

Hi everyone, I've posted about our pool before, but have a neat update. First, our pool is very old; it was built in the early 1930s. When my wife and I were looking for houses here in Boonville (MO) in May 2010, we absolutely loved this house. It was a rainy day and we were here for 30...

    Above-ground steps for in-ground pool?

Hi All, Our very old in-ground concrete pool has a 60" deck height at the shallow end and I'd like to put a set of drop-in stairs in there for my wife and mother-in-law. It seems that most in-ground drop-ins simply do not reach that deck height, whereas Confer's above-ground set seems to get...

    It's Pool Repair Weekend!

One thing to consider if you've not yet purchased the waterborne paint; it *will* fade over the course of 2-3 years, whereas the epoxy paint is supposed to retain fresh color longer. Our pool is an 80-year old concrete one, and I use the chlorinated rubber Insl-X paint. But ours is a small...

    Erratic suction pressure while vacuuming

That's the problem: I swear, the entire hose is filled with water before I hook it to the vacuum port, and it remains under water the entire time. Any leak in the hose would be a leak underwater. The water in the skimmer is at least 7 or 8 inches above the vacuum port. Arg.

    Erratic suction pressure while vacuuming

Hi All, This is a recurring problem. When I vacuum the pool, using a very basic set-up (flexi-hose and vacuum head attached to the pool pole), my pump will vacuum for a bit, then lose pressure, then build it back up, then lose it, etc. I get about 10-15 seconds of good vacuuming, then will...

Arg...out of R871, but need to test FC

Hi folks, I'm in the midst of the shocking process and have run out of r871 solution--I thought I had a spare bottle, but nope. I've now ordered a refill, but in the meantime, does anyone have an idea of how I might be able to test using, say, the standard TC/PH test, and get at least a...

    Algae in filter

Thanks for the reply; I should realize that algae needs sunlight (duh). In what you write, the only thing I can see that might be at work--besides the need to shock and of course the unknown about the state of the laterals--is that, no, I typically have *not* waited 30 seconds after...

    Algae in filter

Hi folks, Sorry for the length of this.... For a couple of weeks, I've been fighting a tendency for my pool water to go ever so slightly cloudy and green-ish. FC levels and PhD were always kept quite good (FC between 7-10 and Ph 7.4-7.8), with almost never any evidence of CC. CYA os good...

    The Pool Calculator

Dear All, The Pool Calculator seems to be down this morning, at least for me. I cannot access it using Google Chrome or Firefox. I simply get a "forbidden" message, a la this: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was...

    measuring ladders for replacement

Hi All, I'm in the process of searching for a new pool ladder (in-ground) to replace what we currently have. Our pool is *very* old (1931) and the current ladder consists of rungs sunken into the concrete pool wallk, with a couple of handgrips sunken into the deck. I want to install a new...

    Pool ladder advice

Hi All, My wife and I own a verrrrrry old in-ground pool (1931), which we acquired in June 2010 when we bought our house. (Story: http://www.troublefreepool.com/post185159.html#p185159 ). We got it looking pretty nice, as can be seen further down in that thread. The first summer was devoted...

Seemingly unavoidable iron problem in water

Hi All, I posted this in the subforum "Chemistry 201" but thought I'd move it here, as I think that forum doesn't get as much traffic as this one. Apologies for double-posting. Merged Topics to avoid double-posting. Butterfly ------------- Okay, I have a problem. We have a very old...

Seemingly unavoidable iron problem in water

Re: Iron in water, unavoidably Thanks Shortdog--you may be right about other things going on. I'm going to "move" my question to another, more-trafficked, subform to see what others have to say.

Seemingly unavoidable iron problem in water

Iron in water, unavoidably Hi All, Okay, I have a problem. We have a very old (c.1930) in-ground swimming pool, which has a built-in iron ladder (built-in, as in sunk into the concrete wall) and an iron drain-fitting. When we bought the house and drained, scrubbed, and painted the pool last...

A Very Special Post Just Appeared on the Forum

Three cheers for you, Jason. Your hard work is very much appreciated. If you ever find yourself heading through mid-Missouri, let me know: drinks on me. (I'll ask a super-tricky pool question, so I know it's you.)

Low pressure when vacuum is connected

Thanks to both of you; I'll try to check on things tomorrow after work, looking to be sure the entire hose is beneath water. I do try to make sure I keep it under water when I pass it through the skimmer door, but I'll give that another go. Thanks again!

Low pressure when vacuum is connected

Hi All, An odd development this spring: When I attach the vacuum hose to the skimmer port, my pump loses pressure pretty dramatically, and the pump basket becomes quite aerated. I do connect the vacuum correctly (to where the hose is completely filled with water when I connect it). When the...

Post Pics of your Repo Rehab

Apologies for retelling a story that had been discussed in other threads, but I guess our story fits in here. We bought a house last summer, one that came with a very old in-ground pool. We're told the pool was built in 1931, and is the oldest in-ground in the county. But when we first saw...

good online vendors for pool covers?

Dear All, I'm looking to purchase a mesh cover online (not necc. a safety cover, as there are no pets, children, etc at risk here), and wanted to ask the Collective Wisdom if you can recommend good vendors. all best, David

    Renovation, on the quick side

I guess I should post a follow-up: we've had the pool going nicely for several weeks now. Maintaining a water-balance has been very easy, and last week I took the Borax Plunge, using the prescribed procedure to bring the borax up to 50 ppm. It's a nice little pool, and it feels good to have...
