Hey guys I just wanted to get some feedback on starting up new saltwater pool. What to do and what not to do. You should be able to find all my details in my signature. They are going to start filling my pool today.

Questions I had:
- when do you add salt
- pool company is saying to put chlorine tabs in the skimmer to start
- what other chems do I need for a successful startup

There is a specific start up for Wet Edge. Your plaster company should follow it. Attached is what my plaster company did for startup. There may be an updated version on the Wet Edge website.
Wait 30 days before adding salt and do not turn on heater
Do not put tabs in a skimmer - that can build up chlorine and acid concentration when the pump is off.
Use liquid chlorine for chlorination

When it's time for salt, test with a K1766 first. A member had 600 from the startup month alone a while back, plenty enough to overshoot the target.

Do it yourself, the PB or his crew will just show up and dump the full amount in. If you accumulated salt or their gallon estimate is high (very common), you miss the target. Add 75% from baseline to target and creep the rest of the way once you know about how much each bag adds.

The cell needs to be off for 24 hours after adding large amounts of salt. If concentrated sludge goes through the cell when it's on, it can ruin it.

Let it mix for at least 24 hours after large doses, it takes a while to disperse.

When Should Salt be Added? In our industry, there seems to be some consensus to wait 30 days before adding salt to new plaster pools, yet some say it is okay to add salt within a couple of days of filling the pool. Who is right? This thread describes why it appears that the recommendation to wait 30 days before adding any salt is appropriate for most plaster pools, including quartz and pebble pools.

Did you buy a test kit yet ? The TFpro salt from TFtestkits.net is jam packed with value compared to the other kits. For starters, the $44 included stirrer and the $30 salt test that's only a $20 upcharge. Right there is $54 the other kits don't have.

Thanks for this info I will be sure to follow their startup recommendations!

i mean to ask you what is a K1766?

Taylor's drop based salt kit. For the TF100-salt and the TFpro-salt, they just toss the salt kit in with the original kit. It's a $20 upcharge for the $30 kit, making the 2 TF kits even better deals.

Or you can Amazon just the k1766 if you bought a 2006/2006C elsewhere.

What did you get / are you getting ?

Any suggestion on what liquid chlorine to use in pools? All the ones i am seeing are granular i assume you mix with water first then put into your pool. I am past the initial 7 days of pool startup and they are recommending i bring my chlorine level up to 1-3 ppm.

Go to Pinch a Penny pool store and pick up a 2.5 gal jug. Right now they have a BOGO you can ask about.

Or go to Walmart or Home Depot to pick up Pool Essentials LC. I think PaP is cheaper in the long run.

Plaster startups are typically 28 days. What startup guide are you following?

I only buy LC and Muriatic Acid from PaP. Cheaper to purchase calcium chloride & Stabilizer (CYA) on Amazon or at Home Depot.

Nope - you don't need or want any of that.

Liquid chlorine - you buy an empty 2.5 gallon jug from them and each time you bring it in, they will refill it for you.
Muriatic acid - usually available at 31.45% (20 Baume) in one gallon containers
