When to open above ground pool in Illinois

*yawn* I'm just waking up from hibernation and using this thread as a guide. Since my climate here in Nebraska is about the same as many here, I'll be opening our pool this weekend!

Accidentally ran pool pump dry (4-5 hours)

Yep, you blew a seal. It is not a hard fix at all, but if you have doubts, there are people that would gladly take your money and fix it for you.

    So who's in your clan?

My wife and I, and a couple of teens in high school. An Italian Greyhound. A really funny cat. A herd of rabbits.

    Landscaping Your AGP

I am using just el cheapo red mulch for the majority of the perimeter. I had planned to use it for the whole thing, but it isn't easy on the feet. Splinters suck. I picked up a bag of red rubber mulch at lowes for the ladder area. looks a little different, if you are looking for it, but the...

Bad motor --> cavitation damage = useless wet end?

Doesn't appear to be cavitation. Cavitation is more of a pitting or impingement damage in the suction eye of the impeller, and trailing out the vanes of the pump. looks like a chunk of debris, or the ol' screwdriver trick. (not accusing you, just saying). I would aim for replacement of impeller...

    Strange pump noise...i'm baffled...

I'm not a pool guy, but I know pumps, valves, and associated equipment. Is there a suction valve that isn't open all the way by chance? Perhaps one that appears to be open, but maybe isn't? Does there happen to be a suction pressure gage? Like mentioned above, it sounds like the pump is...

    Liner replacement

We are total pool noobs. We just had our pool installed last month. When we ordered everything they had asked us if we wanted a vermiculite bottom. "It's better than sand or foam" they said. I had thought that they were going to mix and spread the stuff. I was wrong. They compacted our area and...

    Reading CYA test

I do all my testing inside, like people have suggested. I wonder how far my numbers are off. Never thought about doing the CYA test outside. I guess the next one will.

What did you do to your pool today?

Yesterday had to pump a few inches out of the pool again. My rain gauge said 4.10" of rain Saturday night. Also started to spread some mulch around the pool, kind of tired of the mud. Good news is that after today, it's supposed to be sunny and no rain all week.

    Baptism by Fire.

Yep, all tied up! I watch every game I can. Been a fan since I was a kid in the '70s. Through the good and bad. and bad. and bad. and good again. :)

After initial fill, my CYA was low, and my FC was low as well. 0 at one point. it was dropping very fast. I'm getting there, it's just a slow process for me during the week.

More rain in the forecast this week and weekend. I'll do some more testing today after work. It's pretty cloudy today, it'll be interesting to see what my chlorine levels are. I hear ya on the pool store comments!
