    Algae or bug/worm organic stains?

Hi - seeing a lot more light brown spots of staining (a few inches long each, scattered around the pool. Have in the past only seen this if a worm got in the pool and decomposed leaving a shadow of it's shape. The spots don't come off even with aggressive wire brushing I can't tell if I am now...

Should I close? Unusually warm, water still 68 degrees.

Usually by this time of year the water is at 60 and I close using TFP recommendations and have a crystal clear pool in the spring. But today the water is still warmer than usual and I am getting some CC which is almost always at 0. FC 14 CC 1 pH 7.6 TA 100 CH 200 CYA 70 (I know...

All balanced but, "Is it safe?" (Marathon Man reference...get it?)

Hi - thanks for all the great advice over the years! Opened up again this year crystal clear....(that's what makes me suspicious of how much polyquat might be built up in the water. LOL)

All balanced but, "Is it safe?" (Marathon Man reference...get it?)

Hi We're big fans of TFP and have had great success with the TFP method for the last 4 years. One thing I'm wondering about, because we don't change the water periodically (just drain about 25% in the fall and let the rain refill it.) Is there a build up of decomposed chemicals - for example...

Is this etched plaster or calcium deposits (or both?)

Hi Big fan of TFP and really appreciate all of the expert advice here. Trying to decide whether to raise CH before closing? But I'm not sure what I am seeing..... The pool surface is quite rough - like sandpaper. This pic is the top step surface from the beginning of the season. Is this a...

    CH=150, CSI=0, ok to close?

Hi - big fan of TFP and really appreciate the expert advice here.... Just checking before I close the pool this weekend. CH =150 pH = 7.8 CSI = 0.0 (Poolmath) FC = 5.4 CC = 0.0 TA =100 CYA = 30 I know ideally CH should be higher but I've kept it this way because the previous owner left a...

    Rainbow320 low flow

Hi Anyone have any thoughts? Just installed a Rainbbow 320 and barely getting a trickle of water flowing in to it. (Have the see through version and moved the input to the cylinder to the top. ) I won't normally use it (using BBB method) but want it for backup when we are away. The only way...

    Mystery of disappearing chlorine

Bingo! I never pay attention to the lights - they've never worked. So I just checked and they're BLACK behind the glass! Ok, so I know what I'll be doing this weekend..... Any secrets to cleaning the light fixtures (I mean, other than SHUT OFF THE ELECTRICITY)? Dissassemble, scrub the...

    Mystery of disappearing chlorine

Hi Big TFP fan - the system is so easy and effective it turned the pool chores into NBD. But I have a problem right now.... Average PPM chlorine consumption is running at 5ppm/day this year! Previous years it averaged 1.2 ppm/day. Already checked for visible algae, did OCLT, cleaned filter...

Is it algae? Or just dirt?

Hi Big fan of this site and the TFP method - 4 years! Pool is open - there is something on the walls (30k gunite) that looks like a shadow - a little darker than surrounding areas. It seems to brush off easily (well, brushing isn't really easy is it?) then looks like silt drifting in the water...

    Repair caulking before winter?

Hi - first of three questions: Noticed the caulking between the top of the tile line and the bottom of the concrete deck has separated almost all the way around the pool. (no discrete coping, just concrete deck) Is this something I should definitely fix before winter or does it not matter so...

    Help diagnose splotches?

Hi Kim - not at all - you're advice worked. The ascorbic acid removed the original spot. The dye in the tablets was deposited on the surface, and an hour of a tri-chlor puck sitting on it removed the dye Thanks for your advice. Any thoughts on how or whether to treat the whole pool with...

    Help diagnose splotches?

Splotch update: So, this is funny. I put Vitamin C on the stain and it got DARKER. Then I realized that I had used chewable vitamin C tablets with an ORANGE coloring. So next I will try the chlorine puck again to see if it removes the new stain! And then probably try again with normal vitamin C.

    Help diagnose splotches?

Hi guys, Big fan of the TFP method - for 2 1/2 years! Have not had to shock/slam at all! Two problems left: 1. Calcium scale (been there since previous owner kept CH at 400 per pool store advice). I keep the CH low and the scale isn't getting any worse, maybe a little bit better. Should...
