It is not super flexible like a hose. I would agree that it seems more like a flexible PVC piping, but since I've had two pool guys who have mentioned that they haven't seen it before, I thought maybe it was something else.

I had the same thought on the valves and was looking at options earlier today. What would you recommend? If I were to replace both skimmer lines then I would have three suction lines, (main drain and two skimmers) how do you configure the valves?
