Best cover for keeping mom's pool closed long-term

Okay - so, I need to:

1. Get new solid pool cover (wait until I share a pic of the state of the current cover!)
2. Get little giant pump with hose setup in the center of the cover and ideally remove it for the freezing months

Anything else I would need to do now or regularly? The pool has been closed since September 2020 and some holes in the cover.
👍

That’s it.

Mom will appreciate the visits when you also take a look at the pool.

Also, I have a quote for a replacement solid LoopLoc cover to match what is already there - from Ramapo Valley Pools for $6200. And another $1K to clean up the mess on the existing pool cover + light acid wash + "re-winterization" (??) Is this reasonable? Is there a more cost efficient approach to getting the replacement cover and for the cleanup? (pics added - I know, it's a mess!)

Why do you need any acid wash to just cover it again? Don't bother with an acid wash until you are opening the pool to show the house.

Re-winterization depends if it was done well the first time it should still be okay. Tell them you are not holding them responsible.

Ask them how much to cleanup the mess on top and around the existing cover, remove it, and install the new cover.

Have you looked under the cover to see the water level and water condition in the pool?

How do I choose which pump to use for my pool cover? I am familiar with Little Giant brand pumps - I am assuming they are still the best?

Re: size / HP - I am assuming this is not so important since the speed to pump the water probably doesn't matter so much?

If this will be left plugged in outside and the cord length is not adequate, is it safe to simply use a heavy duty extension cord exposed to the elements?

If you need to use an extension cord you need to keep the connection off the ground and not let it get wet or it will GFCI trip. There are weatherproof boxes made to protect and extension cord connection.

That thread was much more broad in scope and you recommended a single model in that thread. I appreciate that, but I had some specific questions on it. I like to have an understanding of things. Certainly my choice is not just limited to a single option? I see several options on Amazon - it looks like the same one you suggested is considerably cheaper -

The pool company was claiming that this was the bulk of the job and so they dropped the price a little but were still including the other things if I wanted them. I basically have to try to find other quotes, but given that nobody was calling back and all that has been going on with mom, this went on the back burner. Now I am running up against the colder weather coming.

Yup, buy it on Amazon then or whoever has the best terms for you.

ACP-1700 is overall the best pump. Good float switch, does not clog easily, has a long cord, tall motor does not get submerged quickly.

It has an occasional air lock problem that this video shows how to fix....

The fact is you have to pay their crew for a day of work whatever you have them do. There is enough work that they cannot commit the crew to another job after yours that day.

That makes sense. I would probably have to find a small-time pool person for a cheaper price, but that comes with its own set of risks.

What do you think about just cleaning and patching this cover to try to keep it for a while longer?

I think one of the most important specifications is the depth of water when the pump shuts off. The APCP-1700 turns on at 2" of water depth and shuts off at 1.5". I prefer a pump that will pump to a lower depth.

That cover looks rotted and beyond its useful life. Can't really tell from a picture. If this was the middle of the summer I would say to clean the cover off, take it off, and inspect it. Tears can be repaired with good quality tarp tape. But if the fabric is rotting it may not hold up for long.

You are backed into a corner with winter coming. If you want to try repairing it then you need to get on with it.

It really does better then that. The tradeoff is you ingest more tree debris into the pump that clogs it.
