New AGP Install (Hampshire, IL) Started April 2016

Pool Tool,

Is your pump the 110 or 220? Mine is 110 so I was lucky that it is all on one circuit. I will send you Matt's info when I get home later. He use to work for me when I had an electrical company, he is very fair and knowledgeable.

Mine is 110 as well. I currently have two circuits (I think) pulled to the pool pad; pump and lighting. Pump circuit goes to a Intermatic timer and lighting to a junction box. I bought the PL-Plus Automation w/SWG to replace the timer and the rest of the junk. GFCI is questionable on the lighting so it's disconnected for the most part. Just haven't had time to trace conduit/wiring and see if pulling apropos wire is feasible, etc. Someday but I should entertain pricing it out as well. Thanks!

Finished the framing today and got most of the deck railing posts up. Still need to be cut to size but things are moving along!! No work tomorrow, taking a day off to hang with the kiddos! Happy Fathers day to all the dads out there!

Can't wait to see this one f8nished. Happy Father's Day!

THAT is a DECK! WOW! What kind of rails will you be doing?

Kim:cat:

Kim,

We are working that out. We have a few ideas but the posts will stick up from the railings and I will be adding solar light caps or some type of cap. We also have six posts that are 7ft high that will have lighting on them. I think we will have just stanadard railing with a sweep threw at the bottom. I will post pics we are doing that Wed/Thur :)

Ok so I did my first full test because I had time to get some chemicals added and I have been running the filter for 4 days full now. We also currently still have the winter cover on because of the construction. Have a few questions regarding my first round of results. Currently just using 6% bleach and the SWG will be running by next weekend.

FC - 6
CC - 0.5
pH - 7.8
TA - 360 (I had to add 36 drops. Might have to do this test again not sure if I messed up but that seems off the charts.)
CH - 100
CYA - 20 (Only been in for 4 days shooting for ~70 with the SWG / have not been able to brush my pool yet because of the cover.)
Borates - Have not added yet.

So is my TA really that high? I am going to retest but I wanted to check to make sure before I use more drops. Only added (2) Gallons of 6% bleach, 2.5 LBS of CYA, and 200lbs of salt. I did setup my Kreepy Krawly pool cleaner to stir things up a bit seeing the cover is on.

Thank you in advance for all of your help!!

That IS high TA but we have seen it in some other pools.

Have you tested your fill water? That will give up a clue as to what it going on.

We can fix it when you are ready.

Kim,

I am so glad I purchased the speed stir!!! That test would suck with that many drops with out it!

Ok so retest:

Pool water took 31 drops - 310 to get hot pink

Tap Water (City Water) 30 Drops - 300 to get same hot pink

Is city water that high? I had my wife read the directions too to make sure I did it right.

There are many with TA that high. It is an easy fix. Here is the link. Book mark it for when you are ready to tackle it.

Pool School - Lower Total Alkalinity

Be VERY careful with the MA when you use it. It also needs to be stored away from the chlorine as they do not play well together. Oh and away from metal as the vapors can rust it.

Thanks for the reply! Do you think I should wait until I have the winter cover off to tackle this?

Yes and no on waiting to address high TA. No, your pH is near the high side now so you can dose down with acid, which will lower your TA. But to aggressively attack it, you will have to wait until the cover is off to adequately aerate it. There really is no rush, other then you will have to pay close attention to your pH once you start you SWG. You may even have to turn off the SWG for a bit until you get it down.

Another note - which is really early still but definitely wait on borates until pH is inline.

Pool Tool,

Thanks for the info! I am hoping to have the cover off by Friday so I will worry about the TA then when I can add everything and not have to be half balanced on a ladder and a deck board! I plan to add Borates but I will make sure everything is good to go first, no rush! I really appreciate everyones help! Easier to try and get it right the first time!

My only comment about adding borates to a northern pool is that it's one more chemical that you need to top off come spring because of winter draining and dilution, and therefore a few more dollars along with possibly CH and salt.

We have a deck and can finally use the pool! We put up temporary railings for the weekend so we can use the pool today! It was so nice looking out my window and finally seeing the pool. Now to do some testing and get my TA fixed...

NICE! You KNOW you will end up in the pool many times a day while working on the deck! Get hot=jump in the pool! I do it all of the time while mowing.

That pad looks clean! Nice work!

LOL on the temp rails.........they will last for a while an do what you need them to do until you can get the real ones up.

Kim,

The kids say it looks like a farm fence in our back yard! I went in the pool last night after a long day and it was awesome!!!

So here are my test results:

FC - 4
CC - 0
pH - 7.8
TA - 260 - Starting to come down on its own, did not add or remove chemicals. Only some saw dust from the works and the top has been off all night.
CH - 100
CYA - 30
Salt - 2800

So I know i need to bring down my PH to reduce the TA. I have PH Down (from what I read on here that is referred to as Dry Acid?) . From what I see I need add 77oz / 51oz VOL (Which does everyone do? Weight or Vol?) I also need to bring my CYA up. How long if at all do I need to wait between the Acid and the CYA?

Thanks again everyone for your help! We are looking forward to swimming in the pool today!!

Any chance you can shed some light on your equipment set up? It looks like I have the same filter, pump and SWG. Pool builder only has 2 valves included in my installation and before he starts on the 5th I want to make sure I have everything I need that I want add additionally. Seeing all of your valves makes me think I need more!!

Thanks
