Water on top of cover

We cover the pool with a large tarp for winter. I have been periodically draining the water off the top. But is that really necessary? Could I just wait until spring?

As the water weight increases and snow is added, that tarp is likely to get pulled down and fall into the pool in its entirety.

And if the above do not happen water in the pool will in time permeate up through the tarp and you will be pumping off your pool water.
