Water level and above staining/deposits

Hi everyone,

I’ve had a pool for a year now and not had any algae growing - However, to remove some metal staining I emptied the pool and had it acid washed, now I seem to be getting some algae growing around the water level and just below, also in the corners, most of the areas are at the grouting and are all relatively small in size...

I also have a white waterline stain and a lot of white deposits on tile wall above water level, again, mainly at the grouting but still some white hazy staining on the tile it self....

any advice on how to remove both would be much appreciated...

thanks for the reply, I currently take a sample to Leslie Pools and they test the water for me, I only filled it upabout 10 days ago, this is the latest results, I’ve since added muratic acid and shocked the pool...

I see two big problems-NO FC and pool store testing.

Another question-did you add any CYA to your pool after the new refill?

What did you use to shock the pool? and how much did you use?

The first thing you need to do is get your own test kit Test Kits Compared and stop going to the Pool $tore.........yeah they will test the water for free but..........look at that algae.........not doing a very good job keeping the pool clean using them.

I really need you to fill in your signature-what kind of pool-above or in ground, plaster or liner?, size in gallons, equipment-filter kind, etc. Go up to your name, click on it. You should see signature there.

Until you get the test kit you should scrub the algae off. I would also spray the tiles with bleach water 50/50 and rinse them off good.

Once I know how many gallons your pool is I can suggest something else to keep things from going bad until you get the test kit in.

Thanks again for your help, I don’t believe I added any CYA after refill, I only shocked with one pack, I added some no metal and some calcium and some pool perfect+Phos free and 13lbs of baking soda...

I couldnt figure out how to edit my signature, might be cause I’m using my iPhone? but here is my info:

Well look at that!!! You have a signature!! LOVE IT! okay can you tell me if the filter is a sand, cartridge, or DE please (too lazy to look it up LOL) also what test kit are you going to get? See this link: Test Kits Compared
Now look at this: PoolMath You will Love this!! It does all of the work for you as far as math and how much of what to add!

Please use the Pool Math and see how much CYA your size pool needs. You need to buy it and let me know when you have it. Do NOT add it like the directions says. We have a much better way! I want you to bring it up to 30 for now.

Until you get the test kit you should add 1/2 gallon of liquid chlorine/bleach at 10% to your pool each night with the pump running to mix it in good!

Ok thanks, I’m not sure about the filter terminology, but it’s cartridges, here is a photo of the name plate...

I’ll need to look into what liquid choline is, as I’ve only ever used the tablets and packets of shock when needed...

ive had the pool for a year now and only now after refining it have I seen algae grow...

I’ll go look into test kits next too...

Welcome Steve.

The 2 basic principals of this site are:

1. Test your own water with a quality test kit. Its easy to do, and keeps you out of the pool store which will save you a ton of money in the long run.
2. Keep your FC in line with your CYA, according to this chart: Chlorine / CYA Chart - Trouble Free Pool

liquid chlorine is what I use to add FC to my pool. It is what keeps it clean and free of algae. I get mine at ACE Hardware. Some pool stores also sell it. If you cannot find a local pool store that has it then you can buy it at Walmart in the pool section. They call it "liquid shock" and it comes in a white jug. IF you cannot find that then you can use PLAIN bleach. Just make sure there is NO extra stuff added like chlormax, pretty smells, no splashless, etc. just PLAIN bleach. Know that pool store chlorine is about 11%, Walmart chlorine is about 10%, and make sure to check the % of the bleach as some it as low as 3%. There is some that is 6%.

The tablets/pucks add extra stuff to your pool like CYA or CH that is needed BUT too much is not good so lets move you over to liquid chlorine.

You are seeing the algae because your FC is too low and it is burning off with the sun due to not having enough CYA. Look at the chart JJ shared to see how important the ratio is to keep your water clean and algae free. The best way to keep it looking great is having a good test kit.

Those Leslie's results are as wrong as they can be. This is a perfect example of why we do NOT trust or advise changes based on pool store testing. The pretty phone app does not make it more accurate.

Get your self the TF-100 test kit (a favorite around here) or a Taylor K-2006C kit. www.tftestkits.net is one source.

Go find a source for liquid chlorine at a good price. Buy like 6 jugs to start, and add one jug a day until your test kit arrives. Brush the pool daily, especially the algae areas.

When test kit arrives run full panel to tell us:
FC
CC
pH
TA
CH
CYA

Do NOT use any products by Clorox called Xtrablue...they contain copper which stains.
