Vacuuming a pool before starting a SLAM

Got my pump and filter running yesterday and my plan was to vacuum it using a leaf catcher along the hose with a skimmer sock over the basket. The pool is filthy and my idea was to avoid having to backwash the sand filter a lot. Turns out I'm having to clean out the skimmer sock very frequently, which takes up a ton of time once I get the hose back in and full of water to start vacuuming again. I don't have a self-contained vacuum.

Should I forget the skimmer sock and just let the filter do it and backwash as needed?

Getting out as much of the organic matter out of your water prior will speed up and improve your SLAM.
