Turned on heater and water turned brown

I took over this pool 2 years ago and the heater did not work. I got the heater working but when I turned it on the water turned brown. I let it run and the water is no longer brown but now there seems to be a lot of debris coming out of the jets. The debris looks like ants and dirt. Could ants have built a nest in my heater? Do I need to take the heater apart and clean it? Any advice would be appreciated

Yuck. Sounds like your heater was bypassed and left with water in it. Not much you can do now just let all the garbage flow out. Make sure your flow to the heater is as much as you can get. My bigger concern is that the heater is rusted out. I would take apart and look to see how things are especially the heat exchanger.
