Turn off filter when adding stabilizer?

I'm pretty sure the kid at the pool store said I should turn off the filter when I add stabilizer (dry) to protect the sand filter. Is that right? I have it running on "whirlpool" mode to keep circulation going but I can switch it back to filter if needed.

The pool is green and cloudy, so I've also added bleach. Hopefully enough.

I just bought this house last fall, and it came with a 17x35'-ish inground pool. I've never had a pool before so this is a very steep learning curve.

If your pool is green, you probably should not be add CYA (stabilizer) at all..

We need to know what your chemical levels are now..

Salt if you have a saltwater pool..
