Total Pump Replacement

Hello! I’m a first time poster but long time reader. I have a pump that seems to be running but there is no water flow whatsoever. The pump is 20 years old and has had lots of capacitor problems (replacements) and is very difficult to prime. I’ve already replaced the capacitor. I’ve checked the drive shaft and it is spinning but no flow. I’m looking to replace the entire pump and considering doing it myself. The existing pump is a Challenger 2.0HP single speed. That model is discontinued and the updated energy efficient version is very hard to find. I’m considering replacing it with a different 2.0 - 2.5 HP pump. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this and the process of adjusting the plumbing and wiring with a completely different pump. We have a very old Jandy box that has the wired push button panel in the house. I’m pretty handy with PVC and electrical wiring.

Welcome to TFP :)

Most pumps now are VS (Variable Speed) and way more efficient.. they work great and can run 24/7 at a very low speed or how ever many hours at a little higher rpm.. :) These 2 pumps would work very good to replace your pump..

I have an old Jandy control box with this inside controller. I’m assuming it does not support variable speed. Can the speed be adjusted on the pump itself?

There will still be some single speed motors available for a short time, if they are in stock, but as of today, a Federal Regulation is in effect banning the sale of single speed motors over a certain HHP. So be ware of that.

Can the speed on a VS pump be controlled at the pump itself? Or does the control box need to support variable speed?

Speed can be controlled at the pump itself. You wire a VS pump to get constant power. Then you schedule its operating times and rpm via the controller on the pump drive.

What do you use the Aqualink for?

Well, your pump would not longer be controlled by the Aqualink.

Might be time to consider upgrading the automation and pump as a pair.

I’m looking to replace it with another single speed 2.0 HP pump. The pump also feeds the spa through automated valves. The waterfall is powered by a separate pump and the cleaner also has its own pump. The main pump is a Challenger 2.0 HP. I’m looking at the pump below for a replacement. My questions are if this pump could replace the Challenger and how difficult the wiring and re-plumbing would be. I’ve included pictures of the entire system. Thanks in advance for all the advice.

**The insulation around the pipes is from the winter freeze. I just haven’t taken it all back off yet.

Hurry -- single speed motors in most cases will no longer be sold once existing inventory is gone.
Federal regulation takes effect today.
