Hello all, I inherited our in ground pool with our home Dec 2015. Still trying to get the hang of things. Local pool supply guy tells me one thing...yet leaves out essential info that seems to be here. Think I'll get my advice here from now on!

Welcome! Stick with TFP and read and read some more. You'll get the hang of it right quick. Do get a good test kit as AimeeH pointed out. Most of us use the TF100. Since I joined in 2011 I have been to the local pool store twice. Once for a net and the second time for pump pot o-ring.
