Strainer basket in pump

I am in need of cleaning out the strainer basket in my Hayward Max-flo VS pump. I know well enough that I need to close the ball valves on the return and drains, however, I am wondering how to release the pressure on the system before removing the lid. Also, going back together, do I need to prime the pump again before closing the top cover. Sorry for the newby question, but PB finished without much explanation of the equipment.

When you turn off the pump there will be no pressure.. Just take out the basket and clean it and reinstall it. As long as there is water in the basket area, the pump should automatically prime when you turn it on.
