Hello. My first post to TFP. Finally convinced spouse it was mustard algae and we found the protocol and have started initial SLAM. We wanted to know if the pool cover would impact the SLAM procedure. Should we leave it on since we are not in the pool or keep it off while we are checking the FC levels. Thanks for the help.

Covers can be a source of continued algae issues. Either keep it on the pool during SLAM (getting chlorinated water on both sides) or remove it and clean separately. The cover will prevent some FC loss, but I don't think that'll be super evident in the beginning of the SLAM when the water is eating FC. If you truly do have mustard algae, make sure you to read the pool school article, especially as it related to toys, ladders, swimsuits, etc.

We read a good article that described and talked about mustard algae and the double SLAM process: regular level until FC loss less than 1 followed by elevated mustard SLAM. Also read about soaking everything. If we don’t have to keep pool covered I may just replace cover. I think we’ve had this problem for quite some time. Never really understood the SLAM before. We’ve brushed down the sides of pool twice and scrubbed on ladder. Will dunk floats in water during slam but since cover has been on for over a year will soaking it during slam be sufficient?

Might want to pull the ladder out and clean thoroughly with 50/50 bleach solution. The cover, if in contact fully with the SLAM levels, would be fine to keep, I think.
Algae can hide pretty well - ladders/covers/light niches, etc are all places you really have to get into...

We’ve been keeping pool at 12 FC like the post said. It stayed at 12 last night so getting ready to do mustard slam to 18. Will check frequently to keep it at 18 at least 24 hours. The one place I’m concerned about is the cap for the drain plug at the bottom of pool.
