So we just opened our pool and had very low CYA (5) and the FC was being eaten up quickly. We thought maybe we had ammonia, but the FC held after an hour, so it must have just been interacting with the contaminants early on.
We balanced the pool to have a PH of 7.2, TA of 60, and CYA of 41. Then, on 5/9, we started the SLAM process. We have been adjusting the FC level 3x a day (6 am, 3 pm, and 8:30 pm) and brushing and vacuuming each day as well. If we have time, we will add a 4th adjustment around 6 pm.
The funny thing is we have been losing almost the exact same amount of chlorine overnight. We go up to 16 FC as the shock level as recommended by Pool Math, and by morning, it is almost always between 11.5 and 13 at the highest. Yesterday the overnight loss was 3 FC, but this morning we lost 4 FC.
We are testing using the 10 ml mark and counting drops as .5. The CC always is very faint and clears completely in 1 drop (so, .5 or less CC). The water is also very clear.
There is one unusual thing about the pool that I wonder may be contributing. When we bought the home, the pool was opened and the liner looked to be in great shape. By the time we moved in, the previous owners had closed the pool. When we opened this spring, all around the two main drains in the deep end is bleached, and it appears almost like something came out of the drains to damage the floor based on the pattern. It looks like an explosion of sorts. On the outer edge of that, is what I would describe as a teal-green-brownish tint. The vacuum has much more resistance on that part o the vinyl, like a layer or two has been reduced. When we opened the pool, naturally, this part of the pool had the most organic materials (leaves and debris). We are wondering if this part of the pool could be holding onto organic contaminants and slowing the process as well. I can upload photos if that is helpful.
We are curious about any suggestions...is this typical for the SLAM process to kind of stay consistent with overnight chlorine loss for a while, or should we have been seeing some improvement each day? Full test logs below.
