Heat pumps are simply air conditioning systems in reverse. Problems are often caused by low refrigerant or by a compressor motor not starting. Unless you know your way around an AC system there is not that much that is DIY serviceable.

Maybe you can get your hands on some polyquat 60 algaecide for when you're out of town with your husband. It could give you a little insurance that algae doesn't take hold.

As said run your swg higher than usual and dont be afraid to overdo it. Easier for it to burn off in sun than to fight algae while dealing with health issues. Good wishes for your husbands health
