Should there be water inside skimmer during winter freeze?

Hi everyone,

All closed up a month ago but have received a lot of rain recently. The skimmer top came loose and when I looked inside, I noticed the skimmer was about 1/3 full with water and it looks like some blue antifreeze. Plus there was an empty, crushed chlorine bottle inside.

Two questions. Should I empty the water inside or leave it? What purpose does the empty bottle inside serve?

Thanks!

It’s normal to have water find it’s way. The bottles (or pool noodles which are also used at times) are there to allow the water room to freeze and expand without crushing the skimmer itself.

Thanks! Should I lower it at all to prevent the lid from popping?

If you’re out there bored one day, go for it. If you forget......don’t worry about it. Sounds like things were closed well and I’d suspect you’ll be fine.
