Should I be bypassing my heater when slamming (Target FC 24)

SLAM (elevated chlorine) will not hurt the heater as long as the FC is at or under that based on the CYA level - see FC/CYA Levels. By far the most dangerous culprit to the heater is a low pH. Owners may bypass the heater when they need to perform maintenance or lower the pH for several days for somelike like an Ascorbic Acid treatment or no-drain acid wash.

Just wondering what the rule is, bypass or not when slamming?

If the answer is yes, I can slam and heat pool at the same time, what are the reasons why you would want to ever bypass the heater?

Bypassing the heater also reduces head loss, which makes your system more efficient.
