Hello, I had posted a while back about there being some rust on a new railing. I noticed today there are a few spots of rust on my new fiberglass pool stairs, also on the stairs that aren’t even close to the rail. Is rust really to be expected for a new fiberglass pool? It is a Thursday pool. My chemistries are fine except I haven’t gotten the total alkalinity down to where it needs to be yet (150). The pool did sit filled for over two months prior to the filter and plumbing being hooked up so the chemistry at that time would not have been good. Help! I can scrub the rust off but I’m afraid of this being a recurring problem.

Metal /iron must be coming from outside of the pool. Any granular lawn fertilizer used nearby? Search for any source of iron/steel particles.

None! The only thing it could possibly be is if there was rust inside the tubing of our brand new slide but I would highly doubt that.

Although I will say the slide is leaking and the basin we placed underneath to catch the leaking water is now filled with rust particles so I guess it’s always a possibility.

Our pool builder actually got back to us and he thinks that because the landscapers were cutting the pavers next to the pool that some of the metal could be getting in and causing the issue. Any suggestions on what I should do? Would adding a scale and metal control product help?

They likely used carbide blades and microscopic pieces got in the pool.

Just get a handful of Vitamin C tablets and put them in a thin sock. Rest it on the spots and they should go away. No need to treat the entire pool water volume.
