Question on iAqualink and Lighting

Hi everyone, we are getting our first pool built starting in a month or so and we are getting the iAqualink RS-P6 system installed. Currently we have in our quote two Hayward Color Logic pool lights. Will I be able to control these with the iAqualink system? I am talking about turning on, brightness (if possible), color changing, etc. If not, would I be better off getting the Jandy Watercolor lights? Will I be able to do more with them? Is one better than another? Thanks so much!

The Aqualink RS will not control color selection on Hayward LED lights.

No pool LED lights have dimming capability.

With an Aqualink RS system you should get Jandy lights or Jandy compatible lights like from...

Allen I am not so sure. The Aqualink light setup has options for other lights. I suspect they will change the color, but perhaps not know what color the lights are currently on, like it will with the Watercolor lights.

Well then all I can say is the OP will need to research what color control the Aqualink has over each of those lights.

When I went to Hayward's website, I did not see anything mentioned about supporting it, but I seem to remember someone mentioning it would work. Since I am still in the planning stages, are there other lights I should be looking at? Should I go nicheless and more lights? I want to make sure I have flexibility down the road so I am trying to do as much research now so there are no surprises.

I love my Jandy watercolors. I highly recommend them. No issues ever for me going on 5 seasons I have 2 of them.

Hayward would not mention they are supported by Jandy's automation. If they did, they'd be on the hook for support when you go to hook them up and have an issue. In general, Aqualink supports them. But realize that pool lighting technology is ancient. Without automation, to change colors, you flip the switch to your pool lights on and off until you get to the color you want. So when you get automation, it just switches direct to that color, right? WRONG! All automation does is electrically switch the lights on/off via a relay until they are at the desired color.

Why are you getting the Aqualink? It is the least flexible automation system and expensive to update.

The pool manufacturers make it difficult to have flexibility to mix and match automation, VS pump, and LED lights. You have to pick one and suffer with what they support.

Very good point about the support aspect. In my pool build, we are getting the iAqualink RS-P6 system so I guess I WOULD be able to switch them on and off and change colors, correct? I do remember you need to cycle through them all to get to the color you want...which is indeed old and outdated for sure. What, if any is the advantage of going with Jandy vs another company then? While I have you (and thank you for your help!), should I be installing nicheless lights in case I want to switch them out later?

Nicheless lights give you more flexibility by not requiring a specific fixture size.

I was under the impression that iAqualink was good based on what some friends mentioned and my PB said. We were going with Jandy VS pumps and SWG so perhaps that is why the recommended it? What do the other systems offer that iAqualink does not? I am not super educated in these systems, I thought they were pretty much the same.

Ok, thanks...that is what I thought. Is there a rule of thumb when it comes to nicheless lights to niche lights? The nicheless are smaller and less bright, correct? If I was getting 2 niche lights, does that mean 4 nicheless? Thanks for all your help!

They are all pretty much the same. You want to choose the automation that goes with your equipment, specifically the pump if VSP and the SWG - to a lesser extent, lighting, as you are seeing. So your choice is the only choice.

Jandy has stopped selling direct to consumers, so people think it is super hard to get support, which it is not my experience. They work with me when I call and any issues I have get resolved very quickly and professionally. I called earlier in the year on a bad SWG cell and they sent me a new cell no questions asked. I also had an incident of rust on my filter band. Again, shipped me a new one no questions asked. When I first got the system, my builder lied to me about what board I was getting. Jandy made it right and sent me, free of charge, an $800 board. I have no issue with Jandy or their support and would 100% get Jandy again.

Jandy has an excellent LED Lighting Design Guide.

The big negative with Aqualink is they don’t have easy updates to their firmware unlIke Hayward OmniLogic or Pentair IntelliCenter where new SW versions can be downloaded from their website.

FYI: Jandy LED watercolors do more than just static colors. There are light shows that are really cool. Check out my sigline for a link to my pool album. Scroll down until you get to the videos of the light shows.

What is the firmware update process? Hardwire to the system itself or something?

So now you got me thinking about the Jandy lights, HA! I do like those light shows, I am a sucker for anything that lights up and/or moves. Do you have nicheless lights? Would you have done 3 lights vs 2? Any idea how they compare to the ColorLogic? Also, is your deck stamped, I like it!

Here is a list of all the modes from the Aqualink interface. The 5 on the right are the light shows.

The watercolor lights are big, powerful lights so I only needed 2. I don't have any experience with nicheless lights.

The deck is called "stone marking". It is a manual process right after the deck is poured and the cement is still wet but getting dry they carve in those lines using a grill brush. It was just $1/square foot extra and we really love it!

Buy a new board that contains new FW at a significant cost...
