Question on how much chlorine is actually produced?

I have a 12500 gallon pool with a Jandy Aquapure 1400. Currently it's set at 100% and I've had it running overnight and all day today. Checked chlorine this morning and it was at 3.2 then checked this afternoon and it was at 3.4. I have 0 phosphates and zero combined chlorine. CYA is at 50. Is it just the heat of the day being in FL that kills chlorine. If I leave my pump running 24/7 and swg 100 shouldn't chlorine keep climbing ? Except for rain diluting water.

The 1400 creates 20 oz of chlorine per day. On your 12,500 gallon pool running 24x7 at 100% it should raise your FC by 12. You can use the bottom of the old poolmath webpage "Effects of adding chemicals".

The best way to test SWCG chlorine output is to first do an OCLT (Overnight Chlorine Loss Test), where you turn OFF the SWCG and test first after sunset and then at sunrise to verify you are not losing chlorine other than to the sun. Then the next night run the SWCG at 100% and again test at sunset and then sunrise. That will tell you how much the SWCG is generating over that many hours.

How new/old is the unit? Is it regularly being cleaned every 2 months or so with a light acid wash? It could have tons of buildup on it, reducing its effectiveness.

PS --- you should also do an OCLT. and turn your SWG off at night, so you can see the true amount of FC loss overnight. You might be battling algae as well, and its eating ALL the chlorine up the SWG is generating, but you won't know this until you actually perform the test.

It is 2 months old... checked unit over the weekend to see if it needed to be cleaned and it looks perfectly shiny clean so I just sprayed it off with the hose.

Doing that tonight currently still at 3.4 ppm

Next question.. in the 2 months you've had it, have you ever seen it generating chlorine as you expected? Or is this problem been ongoing since you installed it? (and don't forget the OCLT)

Excellent! When you turn it off, check your FC about 30 minutes later. Then check it in the morning with the SWG still off *AND* before the sun comes out .. (I know, it sucks).. your FC loss (and CC) will tell you if you have algae that you're battling (which can happen even if the pool is clear.

Yep, your SWG was barely keeping up with the FC loss from the algae, SLAM time.
