New pool owner, pump hums and trips breaker on 1st start then hums and clicks inside pump before it starts and run fine turning on and off fine until it’s off for 8+ hours I would say. Replaced capacitor still doing same thing. Any thoughts thanks

Welcome to TFP.

You have a problem on the motor armature. Find a motor rebuild shop or replace the motor.

Sounds like Something crawled into your pump. Ants, lizard, or some kind of nest etc....Or at the end of the whip where the wires go into the motor could be arcing, touching, maybe even loose etc. Take that back plate off and show us what you see.

Single speed and dual speed pumps over 1 HP have been prohibited by DOE regulation - Pump DOE Regulations - Further Reading

If you don't have any automation some folks have been happy with Calimar or Black & Decker VS pumps..

Others are getting the gold standard Pentair VS/VSF IntelliFlo or SuperFlow pumps.

what pump would you guys recommend for replacement, the pool is 18,000 gal with 1hp pump currently, thanks
Replace that whip first. It has got to be arcing judging from that last picture and you OP. Even if it is not arcing yet, which I bet it is, whips are only 17 bucks at lowes. That much electrical tape rapped around the ends of those wires is your first, and maybe only problem. Other than a future house fire lol

You don't need to change the whole pump out if you don't want to. Just the motor. That's an AO Smith motor. B2853 - Buy AO Smith Pool and Spa Pump motor - $186.00

Ad this and a pump seal to your basket. After you replace that whip from lowes.
