Pool coping width

We are now in the coping and decking phase of the pool build (owner-builder). Coping is to be poured in place. We have a small strip of walkway between the pool and a retaining wall which is 24" wide (see photo). The Mason is suggesting to have the coping fill the full width. The plans however just had a more regular width of coping and then the remainder being separate concrete (essentially contiguous with the main concrete deck). The Mason thinks that separate concrete would not be very wide (around 10") and therefore would be less strong.

Aesthetically I'm fine with this since we're using the same color for coping and decking. Are there any structural concerns having coping extending well beyond the bond beam and be 24" wide? I believe at least it will be important to have an expansion joint between the coping and the retaining wall to let them move independently.

You do not want the bond beam coupled to the ground which you will do if your coping extends from the bond beam onto the ground. The coping should just overhang the bond beam and not sit on the ground.
