What does this do? Just place it in skimmer basket? I don’t get it. I’ve drained everything now trying to figure this out. They need to be plastic? What else can u use?

Anything crushable. Empty plastic bottles, pool noodles, foam blocks.
Give space for ice to expand into the crushable thing rather then putting pressure and cracking the skimmer.

So to be sure I understand, the baskets stay IN the skimmer, and maybe put a few empty water bottles with caps on inside the baskets themselves?

Remove the baskets. Freezing water can crack them.
Put empty water bottles with caps on in the skimmer.
What I do is use gallon jugs filled with gravel or small stone about a quarter way up, capped so it won't float out.

I removed my skimmer basket. Put a galloon of rv antifreeze in there after removing most of the water. Poured half of another rv antifreeze bottle in there and left the half empty bottle floating in there with cap off. I then put cover on top of skimmer and placed a full bottle of liquid chlorine on top to keep it pushed down. My skimmer is sealed from the pool but water seeps in there and makes the skimmer fill up.

I had this 2 liter bottle with rocks in the bottom in my skimmer before I replaced it with a half full bottle of RV antifreeze.
Thanks Maddie, I missed that they said anti-freeze and not specifically RV/Marine anti-freeze. I edited my post above. We're a bit sleep deprived here!
Well, if it *stays* in the bottle but gets crushed the non-RV type will take a lot of chlorine to degrade it come spring. But if its going in to the lines in any way, RV type is the right stuff.

I threw a lot of milk jug and pool floors into the pool as well. Our pool company told us to to help break up the ice if everything is shut down and water is not circulating by itself.
