I'm looking to invest in a more efficient, variable speed pool pump and looking for recommendations. From my research the Pentair Superflo VS 1.5 HP Variable Speed Pump seems like a good option. Any thoughts about this particular pump? I am looking for a pump that will:
  • be more efficient
  • be quieter
  • help to maintain pool temps (with current single speed pump I lose heat when I turn the pump off overnight and temperatures drop).
I don't need the best pump on the market with every bell and whistle. I'm looking for something to get the job done at a reasonable cost. A pool comapny gave me a quote for $2,500 installed. Not sure if it was this pump they were quoting, but if so, that seems a little pricey. I can buy the pump online for $989 and it says it is simple to install. I wouldn't attempt that myself, but $1,500 for a "simple install" seems high. Perhaps the guy was quoting me on installation of the Pentair Intelliflo (which is about $500 more).

Finally.... is the 1.5 HP Superflo the right pump for my pool? I have 1.5" plumbling. Additional information on my pool is in my signature. Thanks.

Running a pump at night will actually cool off a pool faster than not running it. Unless you are talking about being able to run the heater during the night.

As for the first two points, any VS pump will be quieter and more efficient.

Yes.... I'd like to set the heater at about 85 and maintain the temp overnight. I'm assuming I could accomplish this by running the pump on the lowest speed overnight. I get complaints from the family when it takes a couple hours to heat up the pool in the morning.

So... is that Superflo a good option for me?

The SuperFlo would work just fine. So would an Intelliflo or any other VS pump. It doesn't really matter that much as a VS pump is variable.

Thank you. Unless there is some big advantage to the IntelliFlo, I think I'll stick with the SuperFlo. Looks like it's about 30% less.

I have an IntelliFlo, but my in-laws just had a SuperFlo VS installed on their pool which is similar in size to yours. They paid about $150 for the installation. The pump is super quiet and runs efficiently at lower RPMs.

I have the SuperFlo VS. My system is simple and this pump is perfect for my pool. The scheduling is limited to three settings and a quick clean option. Be sure to install the pump unions supplied. Yes it's quiet and energy efficient. Shop around for installation prices.

Anyone know what the difference is between the 001 and 002?

I researched this for my F.I.L. Here's what I found out. The 342002 carries a Trade Grade designation:

TradeGrade products must be purchased from a retail store (brick & mortar), pool builder or pool service company to receive a one-year, two-year or three-year warranty. If purchased online will only receive a sixty-day limited warranty. View the list of TradeGrade Products.

Generally, Pentair products are covered by a 60-day warranty for DIY installs. The 342001 is eligible for an extended warranty if purchased from an authorized E-Commerce dealer:

Ecommerce (EC) products: Products purchased from an Authorized Pentair Online Reseller (products beginning with EC-) receive a one (1) year (parts only) warranty from the date of purchase. The exceptions are: IntelliChlor cells and IntelliFlo SVRS pumps which receive a two (2) year warranty. EC products are not eligible for the bundled three (3) year extended warranty.

In addition, the 342002 features "New RS-485 connectivity for improved interface with automation systems and IoT devices to allow more flexibility." The RS-485 connectivity is important if you plan on adding Pentair automation in the future.

Check Pentair's site for available rebates. Also check with your utility for an energy rebate. My in-laws received $300 in rebates between the two.

I use the 342001 for 4 years. It is a good pump for my simple pool. Other than the top lid is tough to open, it works reliability. It was a lot cheaper than today's prices. Shop around for installation.

It has 3 schedules. With the RS485 in the 342002, I suppose it might allow more automation controls.

My pool is simple, too. Probably over 50 years old. One skimmer and one return line. No need to get anything too fancy. I'm just looking for efficiency, quiet operation... and being able to run the pump on low speed overnight to keep the heater running.... so we don't have to wait 2 hours in the morning to let the pool heat up again. I have the Pentair WhisperFlo now and the top is a little difficult.... not too bad. I assume the SuperFlow is somewhat similar.
