Besides color what else’s does paint do? Could a pool be stained or dyed ? What’s the going rate to have a pool painted ? How difficult is it to paint yourself ?

Thx in advance for any and all replies

Paint is not a good solution for a plaster pool. It is not difficult to do yourself but it doesn't last that long and you may have to do it much more frequently than plaster - some say every year or two.

I have never heard of staining or dying pool plaster. The whole point of new plaster would be to add additional layer of water proofing or to replace existing waterproofing so staining an existing poor layer of waterproofing would do nothing for you other than change the look.

Would there be water seepage if the paint peeled off all the way down to the shotcrette ? A large amount of peel that is
Yes. If you have a shotcrete pool, the plaster layer that you see is what keeps it waterproof. If that layer (or paint if it was used instead) would leak if there os any that peeled off.

Okay I know shotcrete cause I drive a concrete mixer an have done shotcrete jobs but never seen the finish work. How do I tell if it’s plaster over shotcrete ? It’s visible that there’s paint on there.

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of someone painting directly over shotcrete but I suppose it’s possible. More than likely it’s been plastered and then someone later came along and painted it (if there really is paint on it).

The plaster should be pretty smooth and could look like paint. Got a picture? Your profile says it’s a plaster finish.

I’ve also seen a few people had fiberglass over the gunite but I’m not sure how common that is either.

Two comments:
1) whenever you lose power, or in your case you lost use of the pump, go ahead and continue to use liquid chlorine in the pool to help avoid algae taking over. Just pour in a deep end and brush/broom it thru out the pool.

2) Pressure washers can damage your plaster and should not be used willy nilly.

Maybe post a picture of the damage, someone can provide some advice.

IMO, painting a pool is a laborious short term fix to ugly plaster.
Plaster is the waterproofing layer to a pool. Plaster goes over gunite/shotcrete.
Paint over shotcrete is a waste of time as it isn't a waterproof membrane and would look horrible.
If the pool plaster (a smooth to the touch waterproofing layer) needs restoring, the old will need to be chipped out first. Then the new smooth plaster or other fancy surface is applied.

Having owned a pool that was painted by a previous owner, trust me when I say it is not worth it. Everytime you brush, or have guests over the water will slightly cloud up with paint particles.
My backwash was always white colored from the paint.
Save up for a plaster job.

I thought I did the dark color by using a pressure washer but I’ve been using a stainless steel brush and the dark seemed to slowly turn lighter. My neighbors are saying it’s calcium build up and a pressure washer is not the culprit. 🤔🙏

The lady that had it before the owner I got from said she had it redone. I assumed paint but she said it was I think $5,000 is that the price range to redo plaster ?

It looks like plaster to me. Going rate for plaster is probably twice that now.

Is the issue that the top half of the square tiles are coated with what looks like water deposits? That could be calcium scale.

The plaster below the tile looks fairly normal. Hard to tell for sure. Kinda looks like the water isn’t clear which means you need some more chlorine in there pretty quick.

I thought I removed the lighter shade with the pressure washer but I scrubbed it with a wire brush and the dark color began to come off slightly to show the lighter shade underneath.

100% this right here. Given that the brushing seems effective, I would shock as soon as you can. It might be that what you are seeing is the remnants of the algae that worked its way into the wall plaster. You loosened it up with the pressure washer so the wire brush can get to it. But you need to kill it ASAP or you're just going to end up back where you started.

Get the chemicals balanced, shock, keep brushing, then reassess. Whatever happened is already done, and you aren't going to undo it. Take the information you have and reassess.

Just make sure you’re only scrubbing the tiles where the waterline is with a wire brush. It looks like the tiles that are above the waterline are coated with something and the tiles that are actually below the surface of the water look ok, maybe a bit dirty.

If the stuff caking on the top row of tiles is calcium (maybe test remove a small spot with some vinegar) one of the experts would need to provide advice on the best way to remove that. Spraying or scrubbing with acid can be dangerous if not done carefully.

The plaster is the rest of the pool surface that’s under water and below those tiles. It doesn’t look damaged, just that you need some chlorine in the water.

The scaling on the tiles appears to be well above the waterline. Is this your normal water level? If it is scale, you'll probably need to have the tiles bead blasted to remove the scale.

The discoloration on the plaster could be organic or metals (iron or copper). Are you using a mineral system for sanitation? Follow the tips in this article to identify the stains:

Can you post a set of reliable test results? Use one of the TFP recommended test kits.
