Hi all! Opening day was today. unfortunately, pool opened green (despite closing it in perfect conditions thanks to the forum!)

But, that’s ok - I have the T-100 in hand, initial testing complete, and here are the results:

FC: 0
CYA: 15-20 (couldn’t see dot when beaker total filled)
PH: 8.2 (at least)
TA: 70 (biggest surprise to me lol)

Didn’t check calcium. Salt is extremely low - 300. Just replaced my salt cell but salt cell Is OFF until SLAM complete.

Pump/Filter currently running.

Plan:

- 1) Get PH down (1 cup of MA). Thought this was going to be more but likely bc my TA is perfect - which I am shocked.

2). Cya up 10 or can I just go direct to LC with it being 15-20?

3). Shock to target of around 10 FC

Hmm... I get more like 6 cups of acid to lower pH to 7.2.

Shock level is 10 FC with the CYA below 30. I'd take it there and then go mess with raising CYA 10 ppm and then start targeting 12 FC for the SLAM. You don't need to wait for the CYA to dissolve to add more bleach, either. Just be sure to use the sock method because you'll be backwashing quite a bit especially early on.

Thanks for the second check on the MA Marty. Your 100% right on the TA - 6 cups.

I literally just picked up cya. Should I target 10, put the 2 lbs 12 oz of cya in a sock also today? Then once dissolved and we ready around cya 30, target 12?

Also, before adding initial LC, should I do a thorough brush?

I'm not Marty...

I would add the acid and then mess with the CYA and if half an hour hasn't elapsed, brush until it has and then doublecheck pH since you're off the scale right now. If pH is good, reach for the bleach. You'll be brushing until you cripple yourself, so do as much as you can take at a time.

Sorry Richard. Marty has helping me quite a bit in another thread and I got confused for a second.

I really appreciate the help

Richard,

Added MA and cya (sock)- about an hour passed.

PH still 8.2 (or could be higher)

Should I add another 42 oz of MA? Or give it more time?
I assume there’s no sense in adding the LC yet...need to get PH down first?

I see Richard is off line --

Add more MA - based on PoolMath. Let the pump run 30 minutes and push a brush around the area. Then test pH again. Add your LC once your pH gets to 7.2.

about an hour passed.
That's plenty of time for the acid to react. Time to dose again with MA. Watch PoolMath closely. If you are showing 8.2+, treat it as 8.2 and try a goal of 7.5 for now - just to ensure you don't overshoot and go too low. Let the water mix well for about 20-30 min and test again. Adjust more if needed before starting the FC.

PS - I'm Pat. Bwwaaahaaaha. I couldn't resist. :)

See? We got you covered.

If you've been brushing good, probably fifteen minutes would be adequate to recheck the pH. It's like stirring cream into your coffee but on a gigantic scale.

Wow. Still off the charts. Guess I’ll keep shooting for 7.5. amazing the ph was so high.
Not really.... pH is logarithmic. It will take ten times as much acid to go from 9 to 8 as it does to go from 8 to 7. So you can see how shifting it from 8.3 or 8.5 or 8.8 or whatever it really is might take multiple doses. Once you get the color onto the scale the last adjustment should do it.

As I’m waiting for this MA to kick in so I can start SLAM, I’m wondering if I’ll be ok going overnight without a backwash. It’s been about 5 hours since opening, pool is very green/visible solid algae floating on surface, but returns are still going strong and gauge shows resting psi.

Am I ok to wait until morning or Should I preemptively do a backwash before dark?m

Water level is also just barely above the skimmer line but that will be corrected whenever It it is that I do my first back wash

Just hit 7.2. You guys are spot on. And exactly as mentioned

I'm wondering if you're inputting the right strength on that MA. Did you accidentally grab the low-fuming stuff?
And, exactly as was said. Once it go on scale at 7.8 was one correction.

Now...do I need to backwash (see post above) or can I just now proceed with SLAM and FC.

I guess my only concern is I have about an hour of daylight or so for a backwash.

If the pressure hasn't climbed and the flow is still good, keep going. You have many backwashes ahead of you.

I say Jugs away! And then you'll have time for another dose before bed!
