On my own.

Welcome to the forum! What test kit did you get? I would suggest staying away from the Pool Store unless they are a good source for liquid chlorine.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.
You may also want to get the Poolmath app.

Been doing lots of reading. Decided to jump on here for some real help. I purchased the Taylor K-2006 test kit. Pool store said I need to drain the pool mainly related to TDS = 3200 and nitrates at 40. Just trying to figure out if that is really necessary.

Start a thread in the Just Getting Started sub-forum. Post up your own test results from the K2006 kit in your new thread.

TDS is a meaning less value and nitrates do not matter to pool water chemistry.
