I have a 35 yr. old san juan fiberglass in ground that needs resurfacing. I have an issue with cobalt staining now, will it be resolved with a new resurface? I am thinking of using a salt water system with my DE filter and pump.
Thanks

Thinking of referbing my 41 year old fiberglass san juan pool as well.

Does it make a difference if the sides bulge?

WTP, Welcome to TFP. You have come to the right place.

Cobalt staining is caused from water balance issues. Learn to maintain your water chemistry correctly by reading Pool School and your new finish won't have the staining issues.

Where are you located and do you use well water or public water?

Cobalting is what happens when old resin in fiberglass breaks down. It must be completely stripped down, all blisters ground out and filled. Even then, it might do it again. I have a customer with one too.

Public water supply. The surface has been ground down and new fiberglass sheets added. I wonder if after adding water I should use a chemical to remove any mineral traces?

Since it's public water you can get an assay (water report) from the authority in charge. Some places even have them online. That'll tell you if there's anything you need to worry about.
